In his first interview since leaving Donald Trump’s legal team, attorney Joe Tacopina cited “personal reasons” and his “compass” as reasons behind his departure.

“I left the team because it was just my time,” he told the Rev Al Sharpton on MSNBC Saturday in what he said would be his only interview on the matter. “I had to follow my compass and my compass told me my time there was done. There are a lot of personal reasons that went into that, things that I can’t and won’t discuss.”

Tacopina represented the former president in his first trial last year against E Jean Carroll, a writer whom Trump was found liable of defaming and sexually abusing.

Last week, a day before the start of a second defamation trial involving Carroll, Tacopina said he had stopped representing Trump “on all matters”. He filed notices seeking withdrawal of his law firm from Trump’s New York criminal trial and the appeal of the verdict in the first Carroll trial.

Tacopina told MSNBC he would not elaborate on his personal reasons because “as much as I’d love to discuss them”, he has found it to be unprofessional when other former Trump attorneys have gone on to talk about and criticize the former president on TV.

Sharpton pushed him for details.

“Obviously, some things happened and your compass went a different way than what your compass was when you went in,” he said. “And you’re dealing with probably the most unhinged defendant of all time. Some lawyers say that you never wanted him to take the stand.”

“You’re not the kind of person that backed down, unless there was a reason you back down,” added Sharpton, who has known Tacopina for years.

“And there’s a reason,” Tacopina replied, “and I have to leave it at that.”

Later in the interview, he said it was “absolutely” possible that Trump could be convicted in one of the four criminal cases against him.

MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Thursday slammed former President Donald Trump’s attitude toward women as “creepy”, “sexualised” and “demeaning.”

“It’s completely disgusting,” said Psaki, a former White House press secretary under President Joe Biden. “And also it shows not only Donald Trump’s view of women, which is gross, but his instability.”

Her comments came on an episode of MSNBC’s online show Morning Mika, during which host Mika Brzezinski highlighted Trump’s previous attacks on women (including herself) amid his second defamation trial linked to writer E. Jean Carroll. A jury last year found Trump liable for the sexual abuse of Carroll and for defamation, ordering him to pay her $5 million. He is now appealing that decision and denies any wrongdoing.

Psaki said that Trump posted dozens of times about Carroll on his Truth Social platform in just one day.

“That is not the action of a stable person,” she said, calling him “obsessed”.

“This is a disgusting and demeaning view of women,” Psaki added. “That represents who he is now but who he has been for quite some time.”

MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart cried as he began his interview with former D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone on Saturday, three years after the violent Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The host introduced Fanone, who sustained a heart attack as well as a traumatic brain injury after he was beaten and electroshocked by Trump supporters during the insurrection.

Fanone, in an interview with CNN just days after the attack, recalled rioters shouting “kill him with his own gun.”

Capehart said Fanone lived through a “harrowing assault” and has lived with “the consequences of that trauma” before pointing to the ex-officer’s recent interview with HuffPost where he described American voters as the “last line of defense when it comes to preserving democracy” and ensuring the peaceful transfer of power.

The host went on to introduce Fanone before his voice began to shake.

“Officer Fanone, I’m gonna try to get through this,” said Capehart as he fought back tears.

“Thank you for what you did three years ago today.”

Capehart later took to social media where he responded to a Mediaite story about the emotional on-air moment.

“And I’d do it again! ✊🏾,” Capehart wrote.

A former senior official in Donald Trump’s White House slammed his ex-boss as a “traitor” and “a clear and present danger to our democracy,” according to a new book by ABC’s Jonathan Karl.

Karl told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki on Monday evening that the unnamed official served Trump “loyally” for more than a year “at a very high level inside the West Wing, very close to Donald Trump” and hasn’t been publicly critical of him.

Psaki read the full quote from the official:

“He lacks any shred of human decency, humility or caring. He is morally bankrupt, breathtakingly dishonest, lethally incompetent, and stunningly ignorant of virtually anything related to governing, history, geography, human events or world affairs. He is a traitor and a malignancy in our nation and represents a clear and present danger to our democracy and the rule of law.”

“It gets to a fundamental truth about Donald Trump, and that is the most piercing and searing criticism of him,” Karl said. “The people that are sounding the alarm loudest about what a second Trump term would mean are those who are closest to him.”

Karl told Psaki that the former official hasn’t gone public because he fears “retribution” from Trump against himself and his family.

Karl’s book, “Tired of Winning,” hits shelves on Tuesday.

“Donald Trump has been lying about 9/11 since 9/11,” O’Donnell said on Monday night. “Here is Donald Trump’s most vile lie about 9/11.”

He played a clip of Trump claiming during a Republican debate that he “lost hundreds of friends” on 9/11.

O’Donnell said it was a lie ― and noted that he called Trump out over it at the time.

Trump during a subsequent appearance altered it to losing “many, many friends,” but O’Donnell said that was a lie too.

“Donald Trump lost zero friends on 9/11,” he said. “Donald Trump attended zero funerals of 9/11 victims. Zero. But Donald Trump tried to steal the grief of all of the families who lost someone on 9/11.”

O’Donnell noted that United Airlines Flight 93 was potentially headed for the U.S. Capitol on that morning, but instead crashed in a Pennsylvania field after the passengers revolted.

Then, he played footage of January 6 attackers breaking into the Capitol just steps away from a plaque honouring those aboard that flight for stopping the attack.

“In the 21st century, only two groups have tried to attack the United States Capitol: al-Qaida, led by Osama bin Laden, and Trump supporters, led by Donald Trump,” he said. “Only the Trump attackers actually did damage to the Capitol.”

A state lawmaker in Georgia delivered a blunt warning to Donald Trump about his criminal case in the state.

“I think that of all the indictments that Trump faces, coming to Fulton County and facing Fani Willis in a courtroom ought to scare him,” Representative Tanya Miller (Democrat) told MSNBC’s Joy Reid on Tuesday.

The former president and 18 others were indicted in the state on a host of charges including racketeering over their efforts to pressure officials into overturning the results of the 2020 election, among other allegations.

But Miller said that won’t work here.

“I think he is about to mess around and find out, Joy, exactly who Fani Taifa Willis is,” she said, calling Willis one of the “most straight-shooting, straight-arrow prosecutors” that she’s ever come across.

“She is fearless. She is fierce. And when she stands up in front of the citizens of Fulton County and tells them what she intends do, you better believe she is going to follow through on it,” she said.

She said Willis won’t be intimidated by Trump.

“In fact, all he will do if he attempts to do that is embolden her to be stronger and more steadfast,” she said.

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan said a new poll should be considered “funeral rites” for Republicans hoping to defeat Donald Trump in next year’s presidential primary.

And it’s especially bad news for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has been the former president’s chief rival.

“Simply put, it’s done,” Hasan said on Monday evening. “If you had any doubts that this is Trump’s race and Trump’s race to lose, this poll will clear things up for you.”

The New York Times/Siena College poll released Monday shows Trump leading DeSantis by 37 percentage points and ahead by 31 points in a one-on-one matchup. No other candidate pulled more than 3% support. (The poll of 932 likely Republican primary voters was conducted from July 23 to 27.)

DeSantis has made “fighting wokeness” his signature issue, but Hasan noted that Trump polls ahead of him even on that topic.

“Not even close,” Hasan said.

The poll also shows that Trump has sealed his control over the GOP as most Republican voters are unswayed by the criminal charges against the former president.

Overall, just 17% of Republicans polled said they believed Trump had committed a crime. Among “MAGA” Republicans, that number is 0%.

“Oh, it’s not a cult,” Hasan said sarcastically.
