11 Movie Franchises Viewers Wish Would Just Die Already

I’m a long-time defender of movie sequels – I reckon Shrek’s second instalment is as good, if not *whisper* better, than the original.

But when you’re looking at your tenth Fast And Furious movie, I reckon some questions need to be asked.

In a recent post shared to Reddit’s r/moviecritic, site user u/Eikichi_Onizuka09 asked people to name movie franchises that made them think of the Simpsons quote, “stop, stop, it’s dead already!”.

Here are some of the most-upvoted responses:

1. Anything in the Spider-Man villain multiverse

“Madame Web, Kragen the Hunter, Morbius. I don’t understand how they can consistently bomb so hard and keep getting made.”

This Critically-Mauled Film Is Making Its Way Up Netflix’s Most-Watched Right Now List

Nestled among new originals like the romantic comedy The Life List and the true crime documentary Con Mum on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies right now is a rather unexpected film.

After debuting on the platform on Wednesday, the 2023 psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling is currently its third most-watched movie, at the time of writing.

Given the film features leading performances from Oscar nominee Florence Pugh and global superstar Harry Styles, it’s perhaps not a massive surprise that people might be curious to check out Don’t Worry Darling for themselves.

Before being cast in Don’t Worry Darling, Harry had only one major film credit to his name, after landing a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk, so intrigue was understandably high about whether the chart-topper’s musical success and on-stage charisma would transfer to the big screen.

Unfortunately for him, though, the general consensus was that it did not.

Don’t Worry Darling holds an unenviable 38% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviews singling out the As It Was singer’s acting as one of the film’s biggest flaws (although it’s worth pointing out that it has a much healthier Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 74%, not to mention a satisfyingly precise score of 3.0 stars on Letterboxd).

Harry was met with a much similar reception not too long later, when his second of two films in 2023, the romantic drama My Policeman, hit cinemas.

If you’ll excuse the minor spoiler, what’s interesting is that Don’t Worry Darling winds up touching on the radicalisation of men online and the rise of incel culture, and its arrival on Netflix comes at a time when these themes are being widely discussed thanks to one of the platform’s original offerings, the four-part drama Adolescence.

Don’t Worry Darling also features supporting performances from Olivia Wilde (who is also its director, and was dating Harry around the time of was made), Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll and Chris Pine, who Harry definitely did not spit on, despite what you might have read elsewhere.

Jeremy Clarkson’s Grand Tour Replacement Could Be This TikTok Trainspotter

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May parted ways with their Amazon Prime series The Grand Tour last year.

Co-star James May explained that this was because “I think Jeremy, Richard and I gave the format a really good thrashing and now it’s time to let a younger generation have a go.”

But working out who that “younger generation” may be seems to have proven difficult, with rumours of a replacement from The Sun only circulating a year on from when the last episode aired.

The publication says a source told them TikTok sensation and train lover Francis Bourgeois was set to replace Jeremy (sorry, what?).

“Francis is a big noise online and Amazon producers are hoping to bring him into the mainstream,” the TV insider alleged.

“He is loved by everyone – from royals to rappers – and is sure to be a hit with Grand Tour viewers.

“Francis is not just a social media sensation but trained as a mechanical engineer so knows his stuff,” they told the publication.

Of course, this is all rumour at the moment – HuffPost UK has asked Amazon for comment to clarify – but that hasn’t stopped fans from having pretty strong reactions to the suggestion.

“April the 1st is not until Tuesday,” one X user wrote.

Still, it wouldn’t be Francis’ first dip into mainstream TV.

Channel 4′s Trainspotting With Francis Bourgeois starred big-name guests like Tom Daly, Aisling Bea, and Sam Ryder.

He also worked with Louis Theroux on YouTube series Scooting & Chatting with Francis Bourgeois.

Francis has also appeared in Clean Bandit, Anne-Marie, and David Guetta’s Cry Baby music video.
