David Tennant Announced As Host Of New Reality Game Show That’s Being Compared To The Traitors

David Tennant has been announced as the host of a brand new reality TV show called Genius Game.

The Doctor Who actor will front the new ITV show which is “inviting the country’s most brilliant minds” to take part in the “ultimate” challenge for a cash prize.

The series will see contestants participate in never before seen games which have been designed to not only test their intellectual ability, but encourage them to use manipulation to outmanoeuvre opponents.

David will take on the role of The Creator in the eight-part series, which originates from South Korea, guiding players as they navigate the challenges.

It’s already being compared to The Traitors, in which contestants must avoid being exposed as traitors by way of lying and manipulation of their fellow contestants. It’s also following in the footsteps of the mega-hit Squid Game, the South Korean dystopian drama about a series of life or death strategic games for a prize fund, which was also adapted in reality format for the UK.

According to press materials, players will be chosen not just for their “intellectual prowess”, but their social IQ.

Produced by Remarkable Entertainment, the show will challenge players to deceive, collude and outsmart their opponents” to become the first UK winner of Genius Game.

The Genius first premiered in South Korea in April 2013, running for four seasons until 2015.

“This exciting reality format is designed to keep not just the players but the audience on the edge of their seats with each episode containing compelling gameplay and thrilling twists,” said Katie Rawcliffe, Head of Entertainment at ITV. “David Tennant is the perfect ringmaster to preside over this battle of brainpower, teamwork and deception. We’re delighted to be bringing Genius Game to the ITV audience.”

Tamara Gilder, joint MD of Remarkable added: “We are so thrilled that David will be guiding the players through the twists & turns of the show. There’s nothing quite like Genius Game, it’s smart and funny – just like he is – he’s the perfect frontman.”

People Are Just Noticing This Sneaky ‘Matt Smith Cameo’ In The Latest Doctor Who Special

While the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate to the Doctor Who franchise got everyone talking, viewers have also spotted another nod to the show’s past during the recent anniversary specials.

On Saturday night, the third and final instalment in Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary specials, titled The Giggle, aired on BBC One.

During the episode, the Time Lord came face-to-face with The Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Towards the end of the episode, the two characters played a card game using a split deck, with the US actor’s character drawing a King Of Hearts that Whovians couldn’t help but notice looked a little familiar…

Matt Smith previously played the Eleventh Doctor between 2010 and 2013, and shared the screen with David in the 50th anniversary special Day Of The Doctor.

In the decade since, he’s notably played Prince Philip in the first two seasons of The Crown and Daemon Targaryen in the Game Of Thrones prequel House Of The Dragon.

As well as David, Catherine and Neil, Doctor Who’s recent anniversary specials also featured Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney, as well as posthumous appearance from Bernard Cribbins, reprising his role as Wilfred Mott.

Years And Years star Ruth Madeley also joined the cast, while Miriam Margolyes lent her voice to the adorable (albeit terrifying) Meep.

At the end of The Giggle, The Doctor “bi-generated”, with Sex Education and Barbie star Ncuti Gatwa set to take over at the helm of the Tardis when the new season of Doctor Who launches in 2024.

Before that, though, there’s one more stand-alone episode, with Ncuti taking the lead in the sci-fi show’s upcoming festive special, which will air on Christmas Day.

Doctor Who Fans Are Over The Moon As David Tennant And Catherine Tate Announce Return

No sooner was it confirmed that Ncuti Gatwa would be taking over from Jodie Whittaker as the lead in Doctor Who, it’s also been revealed that a familiar face will be returning to the show.

On Sunday night, the BBC revealed that David Tennant, who portrayed the tenth incarnation of The Doctor, will be back in action in honour of Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary in 2023.

He’ll also be joined by Catherine Tate, who played the Doctor’s much-loved companion Donna Noble.

Joking about the mysterious nature of David and Catherine’s impending comeback, returning showrunner Russell T Davies said: “They’re back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?

“Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback.”

“The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime,” he added.

And while Doctor Who devotees struggled to work out exactly what the duo’s return meant, there were few complaints from the show’s loyal fanbase at the prospect of having David back at the helm of the Tardis:

In fact, the announcement generated so much buzz that it crashed the Doctor Who website…

A synopsis teasing David and Catherine’s Doctor Who return mentioned Donna’s memory being wiped in her final appearance, noting that the Doctor had “left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die”.

The BBC added: “But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?”.

David Tennant served as the lead in Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010.

He also made a brief return in the special 2013 episode The Day Of The Doctor, in which he shared the screen with his successor, Matt Smith.
