Broadcaster Dan Walker ‘Glad To Be Alive’ After Road Accident While Out On His Bike

News anchor Dan Walker has said he feels “glad to be alive” after being involved in a road accident that saw him being knocked off his bike by a motorist.

Dan – best known for his work on BBC Breakfast and, more recently, Channel 5 News – tweeted grisly photos of himself on Monday morning, which showed him in the back of an ambulance with a swollen and bloodied face.

Bit of an accident this morning,” the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant explained. “Glad to be alive after getting hit by a car on my bike.”

He insisted that while his face was in “a mess”, this appeared to be the extent of his injuries, and he “[doesn’t] think anything is broken.”

Referring to the paramedics in one of his selfies, he continued: “Thanks to Shaun and Jamie for sorting me out and the lovely copper at the scene.”

Dan also joked that the pictures included his attempts at a smile, and voiced his gratitude for the NHS.

Until last year, Dan was known for his six-year stint at the helm of the BBC’s flagship breakfast show, as well as his contributions to the sports show Football Focus.

After leaving Football Focus in 2021, he went on to appear on that year’s series of Strictly, making it all the way to the quarter-finals alongside professional partner Nadiya Bychkova.

He later announced his resignation from BBC Breakfast, and made the jump to Channel 5, where he now fronts the channel’s daily news show.

Former Strictly Come Dancing Star Dan Walker Is Not Here For Anyone Slating This Year’s Line-Up

The former BBC Breakfast host was one of the stars of last year’s series, and made it through to the quarter-finals.

With the celebrity announcements for the upcoming 20th series now underway, Dan has shot down anyone criticising the show’s star bookings.

“Will never get my head around the ‘never heard of them’ crew when you see someone announced on Strictly who you don’t know much about,” he tweeted on Saturday.

“Get on Google, learn a bit about them. Looking forward to seeing the full set of this year’s bunch.”

He was met with more than his share of backlash during last year’s run when he and his professional partner Nadiya Bychkova kept evading the dance-off, despite repeatedly coming in at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Dan Walker Forced To Miss Strictly Training After Head Injury Sends Him Back To Hospital

While Dan said that a CT scan confirmed he was OK, he has been instructed to rest for a couple of days, meaning he risks falling behind his fellow Strictly competitors as they prepare for the first live show next Saturday.

Sharing photos on himself in hospital, Dan wrote on Instagram: “Bit of head-based drama today! After whacking my noggin on the big glass window yesterday I got sent to A & E today because I was feeling a little wobbly.

“A lovely nurse at Barnet Hospital called Karina checked my vitals and 6ft 9 Consultant Erik Witt gave me a CT scan to check for a bleed on the brain. Thankfully… all ok.”

He continued: “I’ve got to rest for a couple of days – so I’ll be a bit behind – but ready to dig in again next week.”

Dan also paid tribute to his as-yet-unannounced Strictly dance partner, revealing she “waited for hours in the car park to make sure I was ok”.

“Whatever happens on the telly… she has a friend for life,” he added.

Filming on this year’s pre-recorded Strictly launch show was completed last week, with the episode set to air on Saturday night.

It will see all 15 of this year’s celebrities find out who their dance partner is, while they will also perform in their first group number.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday at 7.45pm on BBC One.
