Sabrina Carpenter Has 1 Piece Of Advice For People Bothered By Her Sexuality

Like many young pop stars, Sabrina Carpenter has long cited Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears as inspirations. Unfortunately, she’s been subjected to some of the sexist commentary her musical predecessors endured, too.

In an interview with Time published this week, Carpenter said she’s “definitely” been criticised for expressing her sexuality in her music videos and live performances, much as Aguilera and Spears were during their heyday.

“I definitely get that as well,” she told the outlet, alluding to the challenges of honing a pop career in the era of social media. “Someone told me this, whenever I would get upset or feel like I’m the only one getting criticised for something other people are able to do seemingly so freely: I’m the one that’s seeing all the negative shit about myself. My friends don’t see that.”

As for those who have “a strong opinion” on her sexy costumes, Carpenter has a few words of advice.

“To that I just say, don’t come to the show and that’s OK,” she explained. “It’s unfortunate that it’s ever been something to criticise, because truthfully, the scariest thing in the world is getting up on a stage in front of that many people and having to perform as if it’s nothing.”

“If the one thing that helps you do that is the way you feel comfortable dressing, then that’s what you’ve got to do,” she added.

At 25, Carpenter is hardly a show business novice. The Pennsylvania native rose to prominence on the Disney Channel series “Girl Meets World,” which ran from 2014 to 2017. She’s spent much of the past year as the opening act on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, even joining Swift herself onstage in Sydney.

It wasn’t until the April release of her smash single “Espresso,” however, that Carpenter was able to fully capture the pop zeitgeist. Her latest album, “Short ’n Sweet,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart after its release in August and spawned two more hit singles, “Please Please Please” and “Taste.” She kicked off a global tour in support of the album last month.

In the meantime, Carpenter has taken steps to align herself with other music industry stalwarts. Last month, she attended the MTV VMAs in a vintage Bob Mackie gown previously worn by Madonna. She also teamed up with Aguilera for a new version of “What a Girl Wants” in honour of the 25th anniversary of Aguilera’s debut album.

And much as Madonna welcomed Spears and Aguilera into her orbit with a smooch years ago, Aguilera recognised the “symbolic, full-circle connection” she shares with Carpenter for this year’s Time 100 list, which celebrates the most influential people of 2024.

“As a fellow 5-ft. female with a similar working-adolescent Disney history, I firsthand recognise and respect what it takes to maintain clarity while delivering within the demands of this business,” she wrote. “Sabrina handles the task with seemingly effortless ease and charisma while promoting, performing, and handling press with a smile and her signature coy charm.”

Pharrell Williams has revealed that he would choose his words differently if he made Britney Spears’ hit I’m A Slave 4 U in 2024.

The Grammy winner – who co-wrote and produced the track with Chad Hugo as the production duo The Neptunes – recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the word “slave” is not one to “play with these days”.

“And there’s many different angles, right? Obviously, what my people and my DNA and my ancestors had to endure and overcome, but then there’s also all the atrocity that happens in human trafficking every day,” Pharrell said. “So, no, that’s not something I would say.”

He added that there are “a lot” of songs that show “what was contextually acceptable at one time is no longer acceptable” in another.

“But I think that’s for the better,” he said.

Pharrell continued: “I think there are a lot of songs where I wouldn’t say half the things that I said before. As the time changes, so does mentality and hopefully it evolves to a better place. And it’s not about being politically correct, it’s about being universally aware.”

Britney’s song, which inspired an iconic performance at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, was initially meant for Janet Jackson before it was passed off to the Toxic singer.

The track ushered in a new era for Britney at the time – and marked The Neptunes’ first global hit.

“She was eager and ready to transition. And I put a fire under that notion. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how you feeling? OK, let’s put this fire under that. Let’s go,’” Pharrell said of recording the song with Britney.

The US outlet noted that Britney appears in Morgan Neville’s upcoming documentary film Piece By Piece, a look at Pharrell’s life and career through Lego animation, although the artist revealed that he hasn’t spoken to the pop icon in “maybe 10-plus years”.

“I think I’ve seen her in the elevator one time. I think we were all going into the same place or something,” he said. “I can remember exactly where it was, and she had her sunglasses on, and I was like, ‘I know that’s Britney.’ Maybe she doesn’t remember me. That’s fine.’”

Aside from I’m A Slave 4 U, The Neptunes also worked with the singer on her songs Boys and Why Should I Be Sad. The latter was their last collaboration, from her 2007 album Blackout.

Ginuwine Reacts To ‘Fo Shiz’ Moment With Justin Timberlake From Britney Spears’ Memoir

Justin Timberlake is receiving some grace after the memoir of his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears produced a litany of unfavourable claims against him.

Among other reasons, Timberlake went viral earlier this year when the audiobook version of Spears’ memoir saw actor Michelle Williams recreate an exaggerated voice Timberlake allegedly used when meeting singer Ginuwine, who is Black.

In addition to claims that Timberlake cheated on Spears and urged her to get an abortion, Spears writes that Timberlake “tried too hard to fit in” with the Black entertainers in his orbit. One of those instances allegedly involved the “Pony” singer in New York City.

“One day J and I were in New York, going to parts of town I’d never been to before,” Williams read from Spears’ memoir, “The Woman in Me.” “Walking our way was a guy with a huge, blinged-out medallion. He was flanked by two giant security guards.”

“J got all excited and said so loud: ‘Oh yeah, fo’ shiz fo’ shiz, Ginuwine, what’s up homie?’” she continued in Timberlake’s purported African American Vernacular English accent, which inspired mockery online when the audiobook was released in October.

Sources told “Entertainment Tonight” at the time that Timberlake was “focusing on his own family and trying not to concern himself with Britney’s memoir.” Now, Ginuwine has finally heard about the moment going viral — and says Timberlake is “cool.”

“Nah, I don’t remember that,” the singer told Billboard through laughter in an interview Thursday.

“I would have probably looked at him very weird if he did that like she said,” continued Ginuwine, whose real name is Elgin Lumpkin. “I just don’t remember that, but I remember him being a cool dude and me kicking it down there in Florida with [*NSYNC’s] producer at one time.”

In 2002, Timberlake famously broke up with Spears after three years together, and released his debut solo album. Spears wrote in her memoir that his most controversial single, “Cry Me a River,” portrayed her like a “harlot who’d broken the heart of America’s golden boy.”

Timbaland, who produced the song, recently apologised for saying Timberlake should’ve put a “muzzle” on her. Spears endured a 13-year conservatorship under the purview of her father, but saw it terminated in 2021 amid an impassioned “#FreeBritney” campaign on social media.

Britney Spears Reveals How ‘Terrifying’ VMAs Duet With Giant Snake Really Was

Britney Spears is reflecting on one of the most iconic moments of her career.

While fans undoubtedly remember her performing “I’m a Slave 4 U” with an albino Burmese python wrapped around her shoulders, Spears shares in her upcoming memoir what that iconic moment at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards actually felt like — and says it was genuinely “terrifying.”

“The plan was for me to sing ‘I’m a Slave 4 U,’ and we decided I would use a snake as a prop,” writes Spears in an excerpt of her memoir, “The Woman in Me,” published Tuesday by People.

“It’s become an iconic moment in VMAs history, but it was even more terrifying than it appeared,” she continues. “All I knew was to look down, because I felt if I looked up and caught its eye, it would kill me.”

Despite a surprise appearance by Michael Jackson, Spears and her seemingly effortless snake-charming stole the show.

“In my head I was saying, Just perform, just use your legs and perform,” Spears, who was 19 at the time, writes in her memoir. “But what nobody knows is that as I was singing, the snake brought its head right around to my face, right up to me, and started hissing.”

She continues: “I was thinking, Are you fucking serious right now? The fucking goddamn snake’s tongue is flicking out at me. Right. Now. Finally, I got to the part where I handed it back, thank God.”

The snake itself was, hilariously, named Banana.

Her performance appeared effortless to millions, but Spears was genuinely terrified.

The moment is clearly visible around the 3-minute mark in official footage from MTV. But die-hard fans won’t have to rely on old recordings for new Spears stories much longer — she is set to candidly dish on her life and career in “The Woman in Me,” which hits shelves Oct. 24.

The millennial pop star has been on an extensive promotional run for the upcoming memoir, which her publisher says will explore “the impact of sharing her voice” in court battles over her controversial conservatorship and how “it changed the course of her life.”

Spears has already shared a handful of illuminating excerpts from the book, writing about the drinking habits of her parents, why she really shaved her head in 2007 — and saying ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake once urged her to get an abortion.

The audiobook version will be narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Michelle Williams.

Madonna’s Iconic VMAs Kiss Almost Included A Completely Different Pop Diva

It’s been almost 20 years since Madonna made pop culture history when she locked lips with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on stage at the 2003 VMAs.

But it’s now been revealed that the performance almost looked very different – with a whole other diva claiming she was initially supposed to have been involved too.

During a recent interview with E! News, Jennifer Lopez claimed that she met with Madonna and Britney at the Queen of Pop’s home to discuss a group performance.

“I was filming a movie in Canada, and we had met – me, her and Britney — to do it at her home,” she said (via People). “And then I just couldn’t get off the film. So, we couldn’t do it.”

Apparently J-Lo’s loss was Xtina’s gain, though, with the Jenny From The Block singer adding: “They got Christina Aguilera, I think, to do it, and I didn’t wind up doing it. I love Madonna. I’m a huge fan. I always have been.”

However, Jen isn’t the only star who’s claimed she was supposed to be part of the iconic number.

Shortly after the performance in 2003, Pink claimed that both she and Gwen Stefani had been approached to be part of the routine.

“It was supposed to be me, Gwen and Britney,” the So What singer reportedly told the Daily Record. “Me and Gwen backed out of it and they got Christina.

Donatella And Jedward Lead Celebrity Congratulations For Britney Spears After She’s Freed From Conservatorship

Dontella Versace declared it “Britneypendence Day” as she led stars congratulating Britney Spears on the termination of her conservatorship.

The Baby One More Time singer regained control of her life and career after a judge dissolved the controversial legal arrangement after 13 years during a court hearing in Los Angeles on Friday.

Britney had been fighting to end the conservatorship that she was placed under in 2008 after a public struggle with her mental health.

After news from the court hearing broke, many stars on social media rushed to congratulate Britney on finally being free.

Fashion designer Donatella wrote on Instagram: “Freedom is a human right. My heart is smiling for you, Britney. Congratulations on your regained and deserved emancipation.

“I love you, your fierce fans love you and the world NEEDS your brilliance. Happy Britneypendence day!”

Cher tweeted: “Whoooooooa. She’s free, free, free, freeeeeeee!!! Free as a [bird].”

Britney’s friend Paris Hilton also shared a photo of them together on Twitter, writing: “I’m so happy that this day has finally come. This moment is so long overdue. @BritneySpears is finally free!!!

“You’re the most resilient, kind and inspiring soul. We all love you so so much! Your best days are yet to come! #FreedBritney.”

Former X Factor contestants Jedward, who famously covered Britney’s hit Oops I Did It Again on the ITV talent show in 2009, had even jetted to Los Angeles to be outside the courthouse where the hearing was taking place.

The twins – otherwise known as John and Edward Grimes – shared a video of them joining in the jubilant celebrations in the street after the ruling was announced.

A host of other famous names from across the showbiz world also shared their congratulations on social media:

Britney herself also took to social media, thanking her fans and hailing the end of the conservatorship as the “best day ever”.

She posted on Instagram: “Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy !!! I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen ????”

She then added the hashtag #FreedBritney.

She also posted a photo posing in a yellow dress – that has since been deleted – adding: “I can’t freaking believe it !!!! Again … best day ever!!!!”

Her fiancé Sam Asghari also posted a “freedom” logo, writing: “History was made today. Britney is Free!”

Britney Spears Unimpressed By Wave Of New Documentaries About Her Private Life: ‘That’s The Past’

Britney Spears has spoken out about the release of several new films documenting her personal life.

The singer, who is currently embroiled in a legal battle to bring an end to the conservatorship she has been under for the last 13 years, has been the subject of several documentaries in recent times, put together by media outlets like the New York Times and the BBC.

With a hearing about the legal arrangement scheduled for Wednesday, two more docs about Britney have arrived, including the Netflix offering Britney vs. Spears.

Controlling Britney Spears – a sequel to Framing Britney Spears, which sparked a lot of conversation earlier this year – was also released in the last week, with CNN recently unveiling their own project titled Toxic: Britney Spears’ Battle For Freedom.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Britney shared her thoughts on one of the documentaries after claiming she’d sat down to watch it, although she did not specify which.

“It’s really crazy guys,” she wrote on Instagram. “I watched a little bit of the last documentary and I must say I scratched my head a couple of times!!!

“I really try to disassociate myself from the drama!!! Number one… that’s the past!!! Number two… can the dialogue get any classier??? Number three … wow they used the most beautiful footage of me in the world !!! What can I say… the EFFORT on their part!!!”

Back in May, Britney voiced her upset at being the subject of so many recent documentaries, branding the producers behind them “hypocritical” and accusing them of “criticising the media and then doing the same thing”.

“2021 is definitely way better than 2020 but I never knew it was gonna be like THIS!!!!” she wrote. “So many documentaries about me this year with other people’s takes on my life… what can I say… I’m deeply flattered!!!!”

Britney continued: “These documentaries are so hypocritical… they criticise the media and then do the same thing?????

“Damn… I don’t know y’all but I’m thrilled to remind you all that although I’ve had some pretty tough times in my life… I’ve had waaaayyyy more amazing times in my life and unfortunately my friends… I think the world is more interested in the negative!!!!”

The Womanizer singer added: “I mean… isn’t this supposed to be a business and society about THE FUTURE???? Why highlight the most negative and traumatising times in my life from forever ago???? I mean DAMN…”

She previously said of Framing Britney Spears: “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it I was embarrassed by the light they put me in… I cried for two weeks and well… I still cry sometimes!!!!”

Britney Spears Reassures Concerned Fans After Her Instagram Page Is Deleted

Britney Spears has put fans’ minds at ease when many grew concerned after her Instagram page had seemingly been deactivated.

On Tuesday night, many Britney fans noticed that her Instagram page had been wiped, which swiftly generated a lot of conversation online.

The fact that the chart-topping singer’s Instagram has been the primary way she’s communicated with fans during her recent legal battles added to people’s worries, but a post on her Twitter page has reassured her followers that it was Britney’s decision to remove the page.

In fact, she has apparently only disabled her Instagram page on a temporary basis so she can fully celebrate her engagement to her partner of five years, Sam Asghari.

The tweet on Britney’s page insisted: “Don’t worry folks… just taking a little break from social media to celebrate my engagement.”

She added: “I’ll be back soon.”

Britney and Sam announced their engagement last week, which the singer later teased him about on Instagram, suggesting his proposal was “way overdue”.

In response for calls for the Everytime star to make her new fiancé sign a prenuptial agreement, Sam later joked: “Thank you everyone who is concerned about the prenup.

“Of course we’re getting an iron clad prenup to protect my jeep and shoe collection in case she dumps me one day.”

Britney Spears Accuses Father Jamie Of Trying To ‘Extort’ Money From Her

In new legal filings, Rosengart called for Jamie Spears’ immediate resignation, and accused him of trying to “extort” her.

Rosengart said: “Mr Spears and his counsel are now on notice: the status quo is no longer tolerable, and Britney Spears will not be extorted.

“Mr Spears’s blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million (£1.45 million) in payments, on top of the millions already reaped from Ms Spears’s estate by Mr Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”

He added that Jamie’s resignation would be the “legally correct, decent and graceful thing to do”, adding: “[Jamie’s] idea of ‘orderly’ is to hang on until someone first brands him ‘father of the year’ and awards him a gold star for his ‘service’.

“In other words, although Mr Spears has, at last, been forced to recognise that it is best for his daughter if he departs now, he claims the right to drag his feet because it is best for him to cling to this conservatorship until he feels sufficiently-vindicated.”

Britney Spears has twice given testimony about the conservatorship in recent history that has been made public, in which she’s made a string of shocking claims.

This included being forced to take lithium in place of her regular medication and be on birth control despite her hopes to have a child with her boyfriend, Sam Asghari.

More recently, she said she wanted her father to be charged with conservatorship abuse.

Last month Jamie Spears expressed his intention to step down as his daughter’s legal guardian, though he did not offer any specifics about when he would do so.

He also insisted that there were “no actual grounds for suspending or removing” him from the arrangement, stating he’s been the “unremitting target of unjustified attacks” regarding the conservatorship.

“[Jamie] does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests,” his legal team said in court documents.

Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean Says Last Heartbreaking Interaction He Had With Britney Spears ‘Wasn’t Her’

The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean is speaking out in support of Britney Spears, slamming her conservatorship as “insane” and revealing the moment he last saw her that broke his heart.

In an interview this week with Andy Cohen on SiriusXM alongside fellow BSB member Nick Carter, AJ called the conservatorship that’s been controlling Britney’s life and finances since 2008 “asinine,” “insane” and “completely brutal.”

Britney recently spoke out on her own behalf for the first time since 2019, telling a court during a hearing last month that the conservatorship was doing her more harm than good and asked that it end.

During an emotional 20-minute speech, Britney explained how the conservatorship had such a grip on her life that her conservators wouldn’t allow her to remove her IUD so she could have a child with boyfriend Sam Asghari.

Addressing that specific issue, AJ says that “really irks him.”

“That, to me, is physical abuse. Just the whole thing to me is just, it’s grotesque. I pray for her. I really feel in my heart that she’s going to break free of all of this, and I really hope that she does. She’s a sweetheart,” he said, before adding that the pop sensation is “pretty much” his neighbour.

The 43-year-old went on to say that he sees Britney out and about often because they go to the same shopping centre in Los Angeles.

“There’s this amazing cupcake shop that she goes to that I go to,” he said. “The last time I saw her, it broke my heart. Last time I saw her, she was with a gentleman. I’m assuming it was security and/or maybe a driver.”

AJ explained that he was buying cupcakes for a birthday party for one of his daughter’s friends when he spotted Britney: “I went in, she was there, she looked right at me and I was like, ‘Hey, it’s AJ.’ And she just kind of had this glass face. Like, she just didn’t know who was there. It took her a minute. And then she realised it was me, and we hugged and we talked for a brief moment, but I could just see that this wasn’t her. Like, I’m not looking at the person I knew from years and years ago.”

He added that he doesn’t think the conservatorship is “fair” or “right,” and added: “Free Britney!”

Previously, AJ has been vocal about backing Britney and showing support for her on various forms of social media. On TikTok, AJ told fans, “This shit has gone on long enough! Let my girl live her life And be free to be who she is!”
