Ryan Gosling Gets Candid About How Being A Dad Has Affected Which Roles He Says Yes To

Ryan Gosling has claimed that he always has his family in mind when selecting roles these days.

The three-time Oscar nominee is a dad to two daughters, nine-year-old Esmeralda Amada and eight-year-old Amanda Lee, who he shares with his long-term partner Eva Mendes.

While Ryan has plenty of hard-hitting roles in his back catalogue, including the neo-Nazi drama The Believer and the violent action drama Drive, he’s said that more recently, he’s leaning towards lighter projects, so he can be more present with his family after a day’s shooting is over.

“I don’t really take roles that are going to put me in some kind of dark place,” he told WSJ magazine.

“This moment is what I feel like trying to read the room at home and feel like what is going to be best for all of us. The decisions I make, I make them with Eva and we make them with our family in mind first.”

Ryan claimed this shift began with the musical La La Land, with subsequent projects including the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man, sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049 and, of course, Greta Gerwig’s hit Barbie movie.

“It was just sort of like, ‘oh, [La La Land] will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing’,” he explained.

“Their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken was an inspiration […] they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when it happened, so the fact that I was going off to work to make one too, we just felt like we were aligned.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Ryan spoke about performing a stunt in his new comedy The Fall Guy, when he was suddenly hit with a fear of heights.

“I think it’s happened when I had kids – really, you start to be way more conscious of everything you do and everything you’ve ever done and everything you will do if you get a chance to do it,” he added.

Before Barbie’s release, Ryan made no secret of the fact that his daughters’ own indifference towards Ken led to him saying yes to the Barbie film.

He told The Tonight Show: “I walk out in the backyard [after getting the offer] and, do you know where I found Ken. Face down in the mud next to a squished lemon.

“I texted [the photo] to Greta and said, ‘I shall be your Ken, for this story must be told’.”

Shakira Shares The Surprise Reason She Isn’t A Fan Of Barbie Movie

Shakira would’ve liked to have seen a bit more “Kenergy” in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie.

In an interview with Allure published on Monday, the Colombian pop singer shared her less-than-glowing take on Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed movie, which starred Margot Robbie in the title role.

“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating,” she said, referring to her sons, 11-year-old Milan and nine-year-old Sasha, whom she shares with her ex-boyfriend, Gerard Piqué. “And I agree, to a certain extent.”

The three-time Grammy winner said she wanted her sons “to feel powerful too” while “respecting women,” something she felt Barbie didn’t adequately portray.

“I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide,” Shakira said.

“I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.

“I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

“Just because a woman can do it all doesn’t mean she should?” journalist Patricia Alfonso Tortolani asked on social media in response, with Shakira replying: “Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?”

Released in July last year, Barbie debuted to praise from critics and was a tremendous hit, raking in over $1 billion at the box office worldwide.

The movie also garnered a total of eight Academy Award nominations, including acting nods for Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera.

Despite the accolades Barbie received, a number of dissenting voices did emerge. Among those was director Oliver Stone, who criticised Ryan Gosling for not focusing on “more serious films”.

“Ryan Gosling is wasting his time if he’s doing that shit for money,” he told City A.M. in June last year. “He shouldn’t be a part of this infantilisation of Hollywood.

“Now it’s all fantasy, fantasy, fantasy, including all the war pictures: fantasy, fantasy.”

When Deadline reprinted some of his City A.M. interview in January, the Natural Born Killers director clarified that his remarks on Barbie were made before he’d had a chance to view the movie in its entirety.

“I was able to see Barbie in July and appreciated the film for its originality and its themes,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I found the filmmakers’ approach certainly different than what I expected. I apologise for speaking ignorantly.”

If you’re ever in need of an instant pick-me-up, may I direct you to Alison Hammond’s legendary This Morning interview with Ryan and his Blade Runner 2049 co-star Harrison Ford?

Alison set the tone by admitting she’s never seen the original Blade Runner movie and then describing her interviewing technique as “bleak, dystopian, [and] an absolute nightmare to be honest with you”, before the whole thing got progressively more chaotic, with Ryan pouring out a miniature whiskey, collapsing into giggles and pretending to walk off camera in outrage.

2. When he organised a Ken flashmob for Greta Gerwig’s birthday

What better way to celebrate a milestone birthday and a huge box office success than with a themed flashmob, tbh?

When Barbie director Greta Gerwig turned 40 earlier this month, Ryan marked the occasion by sending a group of dancing Kens to turn up at her Pilates class to throw shapes to his song I’m Just Ken, who were later joined by a squad of Barbies to perform a routine to Dance The Night, another favourite from the film’s soundtrack.

By the end of this extravaganza, which was captured on film and shared on the Barbie movie’s Instagram account, Greta seems to be crying happy tears, and we don’t blame her one bit.

3. When he took his Kenergy to the Barbie red carpet

Any one of Ryan’s red carpet appearances during the Barbie press tour would be deserving of a spot on this list, like when he told reporters how to best channel their Kenergy and reminded them they are, in fact, “Kenough”.

But if we had to pick a favourite, it would be this run-in with reporter Amelia Dimoldenberg, who asked Ryan about the best way to find a Ken of her own. He then advised her to drop something, suggesting that a true Ken will pick it up before quickly moving on so as not to invade your space – which inevitably lead to Amelia dropping her notecards.

Proving he’s a true Ken at heart, he picked them up, saying: ‘Here, you dropped this’, before walking off.

4. When he paid tribute to Eva Mendes in his Golden Globes speech…

After picking up the Golden Globe trophy for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role in La La Land back in 2017, Ryan used his winner’s speech to shout out his partner Eva Mendes.

“I’d like to try and thank one person properly, and to say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” he said. “If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today.”

OK, we said we’d only pick one Barbie red carpet moment, but this one is too sweet to skip over.

Ryan and Eva rarely attend high-profile events together, but at the film’s LA premiere, he found a way to pay tribute to his wife through his outfit, accessorising his pink suit with a chain necklace featuring a letter ‘E’ pendant (in the iconic Barbie font, of course).

To be perfectly honest, sometimes the celebrity chat show circuit can get a little bit boring, with the same old backslapping between the host and the guests, the same softball questions and the same old relatable anecdotes being trotted out again and again. So when a star decides to do something a little bit different with their ten minutes on the chat show sofa, we’re all for it, like when Ryan decided to bring his dog George along to film an appearance on The Jimmy Fallon Show back in 2011.

“He’s more interesting than I am, so I just thought it would be helpful,” he said at the time.

We’ve seen Ryan’s love of dogs. So now it’s time to appreciate… Ryan stepping in to mediate between some puppies.

When he and Barbie co-star Margot Robbie sat down to film a Q&A with Buzzfeed, accompanied by a gang of extremely tiny, extremely adorable puppies, Ryan ended up getting sidetracked when he noticed that one dog in particular kept getting caught up in scraps with his fellow dogs.

Seeing Ryan very politely remonstrating with the puppy in question, calling him “my dude”, is something we didn’t know we needed.

Back in the day, Ryan was an all-singing, all-dancing, metallic Hammer-pants wearing child star – a fact that talk show hosts just love to remind him of, as it gives them a good excuse to pull some video evidence from the archive.

And so during a 2017 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Ryan was a pretty good sport when Graham’s producers dug out a clip showing him dancing to Cathy Dennis’s Touch Me, the only male performer in an otherwise all-girl troupe.

“They let me dance there for free because I was a guy, because if you had a guy, you would win,” he explained.

How old was he at the time of the performance? “Old enough to know better,” he sighed.

We’d heard him sing on The Mickey Mouse Club as a kid, and during his role as jazz pianist Sebastian in La La Land, but surely Ryan’s most groundbreaking contribution to the world of music came when he recorded I’m Just Ken.

The simultaneously hysterical and heartbreaking 80s-stye power ballad that crops up during the third act of the Barbie movie, and features the immortal rhyming couplet “I’m just Ken / Anywhere else I’d be a 10”, capturing the pathos of being Barbie’s essentially superfluous boyfriend.

We don’t know whether to laugh or cry when we hear it – although seeing Ryan emoting while wearing that ridiculous fur coat and headband combo nudges us towards the former.

Ryan proves his low-key comedy genius in this Saturday Night Live sketch, in which he plays a man tortured by a great cinematic mystery of the modern age: why did Avatar director James Cameron use Papyrus font for the logo of his multi-billion dollar movie?

“He just highlighted Avatar, he clicked the drop-down menu and then he just randomly selected Papyrus, like a thoughtless child,” Ryan’s character tells his therapist (played by his future Barbie co-star Kate McKinnon) as he tries to get to the heart of his obsession. “Was it laziness, was it cruelty?” he asks, pondering Cameron’s motivation, before exploding into an Oscar clip-worthy meltdown when a well-meaning friend tells him that the film’s team “clearly modified” the original typeface.

“Whatever they did, it wasn’t enough,” he fumes. There’s also shades of self-pitying I’m Just Ken-energy at play here, which just makes it funnier.

The Wild Backstories Of Allan And All The Discontinued Barbie Dolls In The Barbie Movie

The pink, glittery dust has settled on Barbenheimer weekend, and with that, a number of revelations have come to light — including that people, it turns out, still want to go to the movies! And that Ryan Gosling is so much more than just Ken. And most importantly, that there are far more obscure, lesser-known and questionable Barbie dolls in the world than we remembered.

Barbie writer and director Greta Gerwig was given what feels like a surprising amount of creative autonomy from Mattel for her take on the iconic doll’s tale. She did not sidestep some of the toy giant’s more questionable decisions or public controversies. Many of them pop up during the film, prompting audiences to wonder: “That couldn’t be real, could it?”

But real they are. Real dolls, anyway. From Ken’s “buddy” Allan to Growing Up Skipper, here are all the very real and, in some cases, very weird Barbies that appear in the film.

Warning: Barbie spoilers and truly puzzling information ahead.

Allan

If Ken is “just Ken,” Allan is … only Allan. And literally the only Allan, since his character in the film is the only one of his kind, unlike the many Kens and Barbies.

Allan was introduced as Ken’s best friend in 1964. According to History, Mattel actually used the fact that he could fit into all of Ken’s clothes as a selling point, but Attitude notes that this also led to rumors that Ken and Allan were a little too close. After a very brief life of living in Ken’s shadows (and in the same striped shirt as in the film), Allan was discontinued that same decade before being rereleased as Midge’s husband in the ’90s.

After watching Michael Cera’s awkwardly endearing turn as the lonesome sidekick, we wouldn’t be surprised if he went promptly back into production today.

In the film, “Allan is sort of like a person without a group that he belongs to, he’s kind of a loner, in a way,” Cera said in an interview. “I think the joke about that, at least how I interpret it, is that Allan the doll … didn’t have a very successful run. [He’s] sort of this marginalised person in this world of Kens.”

Attitude reports that “conspiracists” think Allan was paired with Midge in the ’90s to “canonise Allan as heterosexual,” but it hasn’t stopped Allan from becoming something of a queer icon over the years.

“As a non-binary person I relate to Allan a lot!” said one TikToker in a slew of comments. “I see him as my rep ✨ not quite Barbie, not quite Ken. Just ✨ Allan✨ .”

Pregnant Midge

As we mentioned, one of the more refreshing aspects of seeing Barbie Land through Gerwig’s pink-tinted lens was the director’s unwillingness to shy away from the toy company’s missteps.

We’re reintroduced to Pregnant Midge early on in the movie, and she comes back to haunt the Mattel execs later on in the film, too. A not-yet-pregnant Midge originally debuted in 1963, and there’s even a Wedding Party Midge gift set from some 30 years later that includes Midge and Allan (for some reason renamed “Alan”) alongside Barbie and Ken as bridesmaid and best man.

In 2002, Pregnant Midge was released; the doll featured a removable pregnant belly, prompting people to accuse Mattel of “promoting teen pregnancy,” even though, as CNN reported, she was by then canonically a married woman with a three-year-old child.

Earring Magic Ken

What’s less boring than Ken? A Ken in a mesh purple shirt and pleather vest, with slicked-back bleached-blond highlights, an earring, of course, and a … necklace.

This 1993 model of Ken, long referred to as the time Mattel “made Ken gay,” quickly became one of the company’s best-selling dolls and a true queer icon before being recalled just months later after then-manager of marketing and communications, Lisa McKendall, was forced to give one of the greatest corporate statements of all time.

“We’re not in the business of putting cock rings into the hands of little girls,” the statement read. There’s at least one Earring Magic Ken currently available on eBay for $154. (Just saying.)

Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken

What was Mattel thinking with Sugar Daddy Ken?

His release wasn’t the most puzzling Barbie decision (see Growing Up Skipper below), but it was strange nonetheless. Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken, which is exactly what it sounds like, was a 2009 doll marketed to adults wearing a lime-green jacquard blazer and toting a tiny white dog named Sugar. He also came with swim trunks, slides and sunglasses, and apparently retailed for a whopping $82. In the film, he claims that his name is a misunderstanding — he’s merely Sugar the dog’s daddy. Uh-huh. Sure.

Video Girl Barbie

“I have a TV in my back,” Video Girl Barbie quips in the film, deadpan, while showing off her embedded screen to the human visitors in Barbie Land. This version of Barbie may seem innocuous, if not a bit weird, but the FBI said differently.

The agency put out a “cyber crime alert” following her release in 2010, citing her ability to stream up to 30 minutes of recording onto a computer as a potential “dangerous tool for pedophiles.” Yikes.

Skipper, Barbie’s little sister, was first released in 1964. In 1975, Mattel decided it was time to let her grow up before your very eyes. This strange doll was advertised as two dolls in one: Skipper as the girl we knew, and, by twisting her arm around, a teenage Skipper who grew upward and also outward. Yes, her breasts enlarged as she got taller. You can see this in action in a commercial for the doll, which was perhaps predictably discontinued in 1977.

Tanner The Dog

When Barbie, err, Margot Robbie, enters Weird Barbie’s house, she is greeted by a strange-looking dog. A strange-looking pooping dog. “That surely can’t have been real,” you might have thought to yourself.

And you would have thought wrong. Tanner the dog came with Barbie and did things a real dog does, like accepting treats that make their way through his digestive tract and out of his body by way of tiny brown pellets.

A recall for the Barbie and Tanner play set was issued because its poop scoop accessory contained a small magnet that could come loose. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that if multiple magnets were swallowed by a child, they could attract each other and cause a potentially fatal intestinal perforation or blockage.
