“I’m Very Interested In Identity”: Nicholas Galitzine Reveals Why He Takes On So Many Queer Roles

Whether you know him from his star-making turn in Red, White and Royal Blue, or from the likes of Purple Hearts, Bottoms or his upcoming movie with Anne Hathaway, The Idea of You, there’s no denying that Nicholas Galitzine’s star is on the rise.

The 29-year-old actor is currently starring in Sky drama Mary & George alongside Julianne Moore. The historical series follows the rather raunchy story of Jacobean social climbers George Villiers and his mother Mary, who charmed their way into the good graces of King James I.

Speaking to HuffPost UK, Galitzine described his character as somewhat of a power-hungry, sexual dynamo, declaring that “there’s no one he won’t seduce if it leads to power”.

In truth, Galitzine has played a cross-section of characters in his career so far, including dumb jocks, recovering drug addicts and sensitive princes. One thing that seems to re-occur, however, is queerness.

“There’s sort of a plethora of reasons for this”, the actor tell us. “One, I have so many friends within the community, and I know so many of them didn’t feel like they had these stories growing up.”

Speaking about the runaway hit Red, White and Royal Blue – which was the number one movie worldwide on Prime Video in the month of its release, and has been Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – Galitzine reveals that many of his mates loved the film:

“My gay friends were like wow, to have something cheesy and broad and wholesome is like really, really important, and I think the resonance of that means a lot to me.”

Before this, the actor (who is straight) has played a number of gay and bisexual characters, including a rugby playing teen struggling with his sexuality in Handsome Devil, a gay blackmailer in crime drama Legends and a bisexual high schooler in The Craft: Legacy.

When asked what draws him to roles rooted in queerness, the actor seemed reflective.

“I think with all of these characters the thing that I find really intriguing as an actor is that underbelly of vulnerability and having to hide oneself. I’m very interested in identity; George is very different in a ways because his sex and his sexuality is his power”, he told HuffPost UK.

“I think they’ve all just been really rich characters in of themselves”, continued the Red, White and Royal Blue star. “You know, you read that in the script it just becomes a bit of a no-brainer.”

Galitzine will next appear in Prime Video’s adaptation of the Robinne Lee novel The Idea of You, which follows the love affair between a divorced mother (Hathaway) and the lead singer of the hottest boyband on the planet (Galitzine).

People Are Just Realising Where The Term ‘Friend Zone’ Came From And We’re Stunned

Even now, settled down in my mid-30s, I shudder at the words “friend zone”.

What a time that was. Women being blamed for not reciprocating feelings to men who fancied them. Men thinking that the gift of friendship wasn’t good enough because they wanted more. Grim.

If you’re not familiar, first of all, can I come and live with you under that gorgeous rock? Secondly, I’ll break it down for you.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the friend zone is: “the state of being friends with someone when you would prefer a romantic or sexual relationship with them.”

So, for example, somebody would know that they were “friend zoned” if their crush came to them for relationship advice.

Sure, it’s not an ideal situation but it was often framed quite misogynistically.

As Andrea Carlo said back in 2018 on the ‘friend zone’: “Behind the entire notion stands a history of self-loathing, reactionary traditionalism and misogyny which, as subtle as it is, manages to rear its head whenever the word comes up. It may be the driving force of romantic dramas and hilarious memes, but it may be time we ditch the concept for good.”

Imagine my shock when I found out that this tacky term came from no other than one of my favourite shows: Friends!

Where the phrase ‘friend zone’ came from

While the phrase didn’t really take off until the 2010s, it actually originated in a Friends episode way back in 1994.

In the episode, ‘The One With The Blackout’, Joey informs Ross that when it comes to Ross’s crush on Rachel, it’s, “never gonna happen.”

He goes on to say: “You and Rachel. You waited too long to make your move and now you’re in The Friend Zone. Ross, you’re mayor of the zone. I’m telling you, she has no idea what you’re thinking.”

He then adds that if Ross doesn’t make a move soon, he’ll be “stuck in the zone forever.”

Listen, am I surprised that this was the perspective of Joey Tribbiani? Absolutely not. Do I enjoy that he was wrong and it turns out that friendship can be a foundation for a romantic relationship? Yes. 100%.

We Can’t Believe What Erin From The US Office’s Character Name Actually Is

Bursting onto the show in the fifth series, Erin Hannon, played by Ellie Kemper, soon became the sweetheart of The Office, befriending Kelly, dating Andy and taking her role as receptionist far more seriously than Pam ever did.

A ray of sunshine in an otherwise quite cynical office, Erin was a truly welcome addition to the show and as Andy, played by Ed Helms said: “You’re the nicest person I’ve ever met.”

Whether you loved or hated her, Erin really made a name for herself in the workplace and was soon just as familiar as Michael, Dwight, and Pam herself.

However, her name, uh, actually wasn’t Erin. It was Kelly. And they even told us that.

How did we forget?!

Why Erin from The Office didn’t use her real name

According to NBC, audiences originally met her as “Kelly,” her actual first name. But every time the new boss, Charles Miner (Idris Elba) called for her, Kelly Kapoor (Mindy Kaling) would run into his office and say, “Yes, you wanted me?” so he decided they needed to differentiate between the two Kellys.

Erin then very sweetly offered to use her middle name instead and continued to for the rest of the series.

I mean, would you try to compete with Kelly Kapoor? I know I wouldn’t.

Plus, as ScreenRant said, it worked out for the best: “The closest thing Erin had to an actual friend on The Office was definitely Kelly. Some of their friendship was developed in online web videos like “Subtle Sexuality,” but they were also shown to hang out with one another during the show as well.”

While the two didn’t have a perfect relationship and Erin was often naive to Kelly’s more manipulative behaviour’s, they were an iconic duo and dropping Erin’s real name was a small price to pay.

The US Office is available to stream on Netflix.

Kylie Minogue’s BRIT Award Performance Has Everyone Making The Same Glasgow Willy Wonka Joke

A sentence we didn’t expect to be writing this evening but here we are – part of Kylie Minogue’s performance at The BRIT Awards 2024 has sent social media into a tailspin thanks to a cursed Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow.

Yup, it’s been a helluva week to live online.

If you have been, I don’t know, having a life in the real world these past few days, you perhaps missed out on the Willy’s Chocolate Experience in Glasgow that led to people phoning the police. Yes. Really.

Arguably the best bit of the entire fiasco was The Unknown, right?

Well, you can imagine the internet’s joy at Kylie Minogue unwittingly bringing out a set of dancers during her medley performance at the end of this year’s BRIT Awards who were all dressed… not dissimilarly to The Unknown.

Thank goodness for X (formerly known as Twitter which we DEFINITELY don’t still call it), as as expected, users delivered the goods.

BRIT Awards 2024: The 30 Must-See Moments From This Year’s Ceremony

If you were down the pub instead of being at home watching the BRIT Awards on Saturday night, you missed out.

There were plenty of memorable moments as the stars descended on London’s O2 Arena for the biggest night in the British music calendar.

There were incredible performances from the likes of Dua Lipa, Kylie Minogue and Raye as well as some amazing red carpet looks and political statements.

So if you need bringing up to speed on what went down, we’ve rounded up all the top moments you need to see…

1. We knew Kylie Minogue wouldn’t let us down on the red carpet and duh, obvs not. Instantly iconic.

She presented an award with Monica Dolan, who played her in the hit ITV drama ‘Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Presenting the award for Best Song, Jo Hamilton, a former postmistress impacted by the Horizon scandal had her say.

“I just want to thank everybody in the country literally for the love and support they’ve given the postmasters,” she said.

“Please could you keep on supporting us,” she continued. “Because in spite of what the government says, they are not paying the postmasters. Thank you.”

Richard Lewis, Beloved Comedian And Curb Your Enthusiasm Regular, Dead At 76

Richard Lewis, the critically acclaimed stand-up comic known for his droll delivery and brutal candour, has died. He was 76.

The actor revealed in 2023 that he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, recommitting himself at the time to working on Curb Your Enthusiasm alongside his longtime friend Larry David, the show’s star and creator.

The comedy series, now in its 12th and final season, will likely feature posthumous appearances by Lewis, who had refrained from appearing in Season 11 as he dealt with several surgeries.

His publicist, Jeff Abraham, told The Associated Press that Lewis died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack.

Lewis starred in the TV show Anything but Love (1989 to 1992) with Jamie Lee Curtis and also played in the films Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995). He also regularly appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman and The Howard Stern Show.

Lewis, who dubbed himself the Prince of Pain, wrote a 2000 memoir titled The Other Great Depression.

“I’ve devoted my life to comedy and my sobriety the last almost 27 years. I’m overwhelmed with joy right now. I never learned how to keep joy in my head for more than a minute, but I’m breaking all records for my life today,” Lewis told Variety in 2021.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lapinsky.

Jon Stewart Breaks Down In Tears As He Shares Heartbreaking News About His Dog

Jon Stewart dedicated his closing segment to remembering his three-legged dog, Dipper, on Monday.

Choking back tears throughout the tribute, The Daily Show host shared that Dipper had died on Sunday.

“He was ready. He was tired,” Stewart said. “But I wasn’t.”

He said his family were all with Dipper in his final moments. The show’s credits rolled alongside a sweet video of Dipper frolicking in the snow.

Before sharing the news, Stewart recalled visiting an animal shelter in New York City with his young children 12 or 13 years ago to take part in a fundraiser.

They ended up going home with a new family member, who had lost a leg after being hit by a car in Brooklyn, he said.

“They put the dog in my lap, and we left that day feeling really good. We’d helped this great organisation, and we also left with this is one-ish-year-old pitbull,” Stewart said.

“We called him Dipper. And in a world of good boys, he was the best,” he added. “He used to come to The Daily Show every day … We’d come and tape the show, and Dipper would wait for me to be done.”

He continued: “He met actors and authors and presidents and kings. And he did what the Taliban could not do, which is put a scare into Malala Yousafzai.”

He included a video of the activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate running away from Dipper backstage.
