The Girl Before: From Cast To The Book It Was Based On, Here’s What You Need To Know About The New BBC Drama

If you’ve already had enough of cheesy Christmas films and festive TV specials then BBC One might have just the thing to keep you entertained this week.

New four-part thriller The Girl Before is set to air across four consecutive nights in the lead-up to the big day, and it is certainly an antidote to the usual Christmas schmaltz.

If that sounds like something up your street and you want to know more, here’s what we can tell you about it…

What is The Girl Before about?

According to the BBC, The Girl Before “tells the story of Jane, who gets the chance to move into a beautiful, ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect.

“There’s just one catch: the occupants must abide by his list of exacting rules. Jane starts to feel the house changing her in unexpected ways, but when she makes the shocking discovery about her predecessor Emma (Jessica Plummer), she’s forced to confront unnerving similarities. As the two women’s timelines interweave, Jane begins to question if her fate will be the same as the girl before…”

Who is in The Girl Before cast?

Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show, Loki, Black Mirror) plays Jane Cavendish, a financial PR exec who takes solace in One Folgate Street.

Having been shell-shocked by a recent trauma, the minimalist house is a retreat from Jane’s strife, and the discipline required to live there chimes with her own work ethic and high standards. However, the mystery of what happened to the girl who lived there before soon begins to consume her.

“She’s incredibly raw on the inside,” Gugu says. “One Folgate Street really explores the opportunity for Jane to have a fresh start, but how all those things are still tormenting her in the house.”

Jessica Plummer (EastEnders, I’m A Celebrity) plays Emma Matthews, the woman who previously lived at One Folgate Street.

Emma moves into the house at a point in her life where she is unsatisfied with her career and partner, and is still traumatised by two separate acts of violence in her past, which she has always felt too ashamed to share.

Jessica says: “Emma uses distractions as a coping mechanism. She wants to put to bed things that aren’t working anymore and reinvent herself all over again.”

However, while she hopes to find security and safety, her life soon spirals out of control.

David Oyelowo (Selma, Nightingale, Spooks) plays Edward Monkford, the successful but enigmatic architect of One Folgate Street. Edward is described as being such a perfectionist that the slightest flaw in his surroundings causes him almost physical pain, while his grief has manifested itself into the extreme minimalism present in his architecture.

“He also has this fascinating condition called repetition compulsion,” David explains.

“In speaking to some therapists for research, I found that we all have a certain degree of this going through life and either making the same mistakes or making some of the same choices – basically habitually finding ourselves in situations that may or may not be healthy for us… It was intriguing to explore that, but then also the concept of this guy who is trying to control his life, manipulate his life, be fully in the driving seat of his life to a very unhealthy degree.”

Viewers will be left wondering if Edward is dangerous, or merely damaged, and whether he is a victim, or a killer…

Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody, X-Men: Apocalypse, EastEnders) plays Simon Wakefield, Emma’s partner. He suspects Emma is out of his league and will do anything to make her feel he’s “the one” for her.

“He’s very much a beta to Edward’s alpha male,” Ben says. “The character is very submissive… he beats himself up for being so submissive because he wants to be the alpha.”

What book is The Girl Before based on?

The Girl Before has been adapted for TV from the the 2016 novel of the same name by author JP Delaney.

After the book’s release, it became an instant New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller and sold over a million copies in 40 countries.

The writer has also published titles including The Perfect Wife, Believe Me and Playing Nice.

JP Delaney is a pseudonym with the same author having also published the Carnivia trilogy under the name Jonathan Holt, and titles including The Food Of Love, The Wedding Officer and Undressing under the name Anthony Capella.

How does the TV adaptation differ to the book?

According to JP Delaney, who also worked on the script for the TV series, it is “simpler” plot-wise than the book as some of the “twists and turns” had to be cut out. That said, he assures readers that the show has ended up being “very similar as an overall plot”.

However, he notes that the main difference is that the book “is very much within its genre” as a thriller, so is “all about the plot and pace”, whereas the TV series is “more nuanced and character-driven than the book”.

“In TV, you have a chance to unpack people’s characters a bit more… That’s been one of the most fun things about doing it,” he adds.

When is The Girl Before on?

The Girl Before airs from Sunday 19 to Wednesday 22 December at 9pm on BBC One, with episodes available to stream on iPlayer.

Anton Du Beke Eyes Permanent Seat On Strictly Panel As First Year Of Judging Draws To An End

Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke has said he hopes to retain his seat on the panel in the future as his first year as an official judge comes to an end.

Having made no secret of his hopes to become a Strictly judge in the past, the former long-serving professional finally got his wish this year, when he was recruited to fill in for Bruno Tonioli, who couldn’t take part in the show due to travel restrictions.

With the series almost over, viewers are now questioning whether Anton – who has been well-received by most Strictly fans – could be kept on as a full-time judge, which he seems quite in favour of.

Reflecting on how he’s found judging Strictly, he joked to Metro: “I’ve loved coming back every week. I’ll carry on judging, please.”

When asked whether he’d missed dancing, he added: “I have a bit, especially when I see a number that I wish I’d done. When Tom Fletcher danced a foxtrot to Fly Me To The Moon I wanted to nudge him out of the way and have a dance, although I don’t think he’d have appreciated that.

“But then I’m not missing the bit where they go, ‘And not dancing next week is…’.”

Craig Revel Horwood recently said he’d be in favour of Anton becoming a permanent Strictly judge.

Earlier this week, the sharp-tongued star said Anton had been “a great addition” to the panel, explaining: “He knows the process of working with celebrities inside out, he’s been there.

“Particularly with celebs that haven’t been ‘gifted’, he’s had to manoeuvre them around that dance floor – and he’s been with great dancers, where he could show off his talents.

“Armed with all that information, he’s showing great empathy for the celebs,” Craig added. “He’s more lenient than me. And he’s funny. Long may it continue, he’s a good egg, Anton.”

This year’s Strictly final airs on Saturday night at 7pm on BBC One.

Brendan Cole’s Dancing On Ice Stint Has Already Resulted In A Hospital Dash (And The Show Hasn’t Even Started)

Dancing On Ice’s return to our screns is still over a month away, but training for the show has already got off to a bad start for Brendan Cole.

The former Strictly Come Dancing professional has revealed he was taken to hospital while training for the launch show, which will air in January.

Brendan is one of 12 skating stars taking to the ice next year and has been practicing his moves on the rink with professional partner Vanessa Bauer.

However, he ended up needing medical attention for concussion after a fall on the ice.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he said: “I was on the ice and I took my mind off what I was doing for a second. I turned – and that’s the last thing I remember.

“I was taken to hospital and ended up with a concussion. When I realised what had happened, I was horrified.

“What happened made me realise you have to be 100% focused when you’re on the ice. The moment you switch off, you make silly mistakes. It has been a great learning curve.

“It made me think, ‘Don’t do that again, as this is really dangerous’. The other day I was on the ice and had 20 minutes left of my training session, but I knew I was running out of steam and could start making mistakes.”

He continued: “That’s dangerous, especially when you’re doing it with a partner and their safety is your responsibility. So I decided I’d done enough training and it was time to go.”

The accident came just days after Brendan accidentally cut Vanessa’s back with his skating blade during training.

The pair will be taking to the ice when Dancing On Ice returns, alongside the likes of S Club 7 singer Rachel Stevens, Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor and former Love Islander Liberty Poole.

Earlier this month, Brendan was forced to address claims he’d already become embroiled in a feud with fellow competitor Ben Foden.

Ed Sheeran Reflects On ‘Bittersweet’ Game Of Thrones Cameo: ‘I Feel I P****d A Lot Of People Off’

Ed Sheeran has admitted appearing in Game Of Thrones was “bittersweet” after receiving a backlash to his cameo.

The singer popped up in the seventh series of the hit fantasy drama as a Lannister soldier who serenaded Maisie Williams’ character Arya Stark after meeting in the woods en route to King’s Landing.

The cameo was met with a decidedly mixed reaction from fans, with many claiming it was disrupting and took them out of the world of Westeros.

Ed’s appearance didn’t sit right with Hodor actor Kristian Nairn either, who spoke out publicly about the matter.

Addressing the reaction during an interview with Dave Berry on Absolute Radio, Ed said: “Game of Thrones was like bittersweet because I feel like I pissed off a lot of people by being in that, but anytime I meet someone that is like ‘oh you cameoed on that show’ I’m like what would you say? Like everyone would say yes. I was a fan of the show, they asked me to be in it.

“I didn’t expect there to be that much backlash but I am definitely like more careful when I am offered cameos now.”

In an interview with HuffPost, Kristian Nairn told HuffPost: “I’m not a fan of the cameos in Game of Thrones. I don’t like them. I think it’s stupid. I don’t mind going on the record on that. I just think it takes you right out of the world. Especially Ed Sheeran.

“I was like, ‘Why is Ed Sheeran here?’ I mean, Ed Sheeran’s great. He’s a great guy, great musician, but why is he in Game of Thrones?”

He added: “I’m being tactful here, but just not a fan of the cameo. I think most people would agree with me there. It was a big snap to reality. It’s like, ‘What? What?’”

However, Ed was defended by Game Of Thrones director Jeremy Podeswa, who suggested that people were not willing to give him a chance.

There were previously reports that Ed left Twitter because of the reaction to the cameo, but he denied that was the case, saying he had always planned to abandon the platform and his cameo was “clearly fuckin’ awesome.”

He was reportedly cast in the show as a sweet surprise for Maisie Williams, who’s a fan.

Other stars who made cameos in Game Of Thrones include members of the metal group Mastodon and fellow bands Of Monsters and Men and Sigur Rós.

The Dave Berry Breakfast Show airs weekdays at 6am on Absolute Radio.

JoJo Siwa’s Disturbing Dancing With The Stars Routine As Pennywise Is The Actual Stuff Of Nightmares

JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson perform a jazz routine on Dancing with the Stars

On nearly every level, a dance performance featuring the evil clown from Stephen King’s It and one of his child victims set to the tune of a Broadway score shouldn’t work.

And yet, here’s JoJo Siwa in full Pennywise drag delivering an absolutely deranged and downright genius performance to the tune of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes on the US version of Strictly Come Dancing on Monday night.

Fully understanding the assignment of Horror Night for Dancing With The Stars’ series’ Halloween episode, the Dance Moms alum performed a jazz routine alongside pro Jenna Johnson – dressed in a children’s rain costume with a big red balloon, naturally – to a creepy remix of the song by District 78 featuring Patrice Covington.

Despite her relentlessly positive demeanour off the dance floor, JoJo managed to capture exactly what makes Stephen King’s creation so menacing. Keeping low to the ground and bouncing on one leg at a time, she tapped into her inner Pennywise, all while showcasing her well-established killer dance skills.

The performance ended with JoJo grabbing Jenna by the throat, ripping off her fake hand and then chomping on it, as the song came to a close with a blood-curdling scream.

The judges uniformly lavished praise upon the star, who for the second week in a row earned a perfect score.

“It. Is. Terrifying. And absolutely brilliant. You turned a nightmare into a work of art,“ remarked Bruno Tonioli. “The quality of your dances — the thing you did in there, combining jazz, ballet, contemporary, acrobatics. I’m telling you, you are a terrific talent.”

Carrie Ann Inaba said: “What I loved about this performance is you pushed yourself further,” while Len Goodman added:“If ever a dance captured the flavour of a book, that was it.”

JoJo, who’s made history on the series as the first contestant to be paired with a same-sex partner, is now the clear front-runner to win the Mirrorball Trophy.

Her performance also stirred up plenty of reactions on social media, with fans watching along and celebrating the delightfully unhinged dance.

Strictly Pro Johannes Radebe Shares Beautiful Message After Receiving Wave Of ‘Love And Support’

Guy Levy/BBC

John Whaite and Johannes Radebe

Strictly Come Dancing professional Johannes Radebe has thanked his fans for their support after he and John Whaite dominated the competition with their Movie Week performance on Saturday night.

Johannes admitted that he’s been avoiding social media since he and John began competing as Strictly’s first ever male pairing, but took a moment to thank those who’d shared their “love and support” in the last few weeks.

“I’ve been avoiding Twitter because it can be brutal, BUT there’s been more love and support than ignorance and stupidity, hence I want to say thank you to everyone who gets it,” he wrote on Tuesday night.

“We will continue showing up and thank you for your lovely messages/comments.”

The dancer signed off the message: “Love Jo.”

John and Johannes have emerged as frontrunners for the Glitterball trophy in the first few weeks of this year’s series, and last week landed the highest score of the series so far.

The pair received a near-perfect score of 39 for their Pirates Of The Caribbean-inspired Paso Doble routine, which marked the first time this particular dance had been performed by a same-sex couple on Strictly.

John and Johannes paid tribute to Pirates Of The Caribbean on Saturday night

On dancing with a man on TV, Johannes previously told Steph McGovern: “I’ve been championing this all my life… the fact the moment is here now… It’s been lovely.

“I saw Nicola [Adams] and Katya [Jones] do it last year and was like ‘yay’, so when it came round I knew I would love to be a part of it. So when John said, ‘I want to do this’… and proudly so, I was like, ‘this is my guy. It has to be him, it has to be me and him’.”

Strictly continues on Saturday night on BBC One.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Star Charity Kase Wins Wave Of Praise For Candid Chat About HIV Status

BBC

Charity Kase in the Drag Race work room

This article contains spoilers for this week’s instalment of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Charity Kase won praise from viewers after a candid discussion in this week’s episode, in which she spoke about her HIV status.

Speaking to competitor Kitty Scott Claus in the work room this week, Charity – known for her surreal style of drag – was asked what got her started in the artform.

Charity then explained that she got into drag as a way of dealing with “dark times” that she’d been through in her late teens.

I moved to London when I was 17 and then when I was 18 I was having a good time and I was on the scene,” she said.

“But then I ended up contracting HIV and it was kind of really hard for me to process that at 18. I was still a child, do you know what I mean?

“Six years on I’m still living with the after effects of this one night where this guy took advantage of me.”

BBC

Charity also shared that she has received abusive messages on dating apps in the past when she has disclosed her status, adding: “The trauma of getting diagnosed positive really comes from the stigma of HIV and it’s really sad that’s such a thing.”

“I take three tablets a day and I live a normal life expectancy, and I am undetectable, that means that the virus cannot be passed on from me,” she said in a confessional. “These are major, major steps towards controlling the virus.”

After the episode debuted, Charity received a wave of support from viewers who applauded her for helping destigmatise HIV:

Charity was also praised by the organisation the Terrence Higgins Trust, who tweeted: “It’s amazing to see @thecharitykase using her platform on @dragraceukbbc to educate people on the reality of HIV today.

“It’s so important to know the facts on HIV and challenge attitudes towards the virus that are stuck in the 1980s. HIV has changed. Tell Everyone.”

After the episode aired, Charity wrote on Instagram: “Thank you to @dragraceukbbc for the opportunity to share my story and to @thtorguk for all of their support and work they do.

“I wanted to open up on this platform to hopefully educate and help some people watching. The best way to combat stigma is through education.”

Thursday night’s instalment saw the impromptu exit of Victoria Scone, who sustained a knee injury during the first episode of the series, and was forced to bow out early on medical grounds.

Victoria made history as the first cisgender woman to compete on any series of Drag Race, and it’s expected she’ll make a return if Drag Race UK is commissioned for a fourth season.

At the end of the episode, Veronica Green was sent home after a lip sync against Vanity Milan.

Veronica previously competed on the second season of Drag Race UK but, like Victoria, had to leave the show halfway through when she contracted Covid-19.

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is available to watch now on BBC Three.

Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan Reveals Season One Twist Almost Played Out Very Differently

Warning: This article contains massive spoilers for the first season of Bridgerton.

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has revealed that her character’s epic twist in the first season finale almost played out very differently.

The Irish star plays Penelope Featherington in the much-loved period drama, a character who is unveiled as the gossip columnist Lady Whistledown at the end of the Netflix show’s first run.

With the cast now gearing up for the release of Bridgerton’s second series, Nicola has admitted that producers had initially wanted to keep Penelope’s secret under wraps for a bit longer before spilling the beans to viewers.

“They had changed back and forward a few times,” she told cast members Simone Ashley, Jonathan Bailey and Charithra Chandran during Netflix’s Tudum event.

Nicola went on to say that bosses initially wanted to end the series with a “red herring”, pointing towards Cressida Cowper as Lady Whistledown’s true identity rather than Penelope, before eventually settling on the current ending.

However, it turns out that unmasking Penelope early on in Bridgerton’s run has worked out well for the character in the forthcoming series.

Nicola added: “How do I say this without being a spoiler? It’s very satisfying, what happens with Penelope, in season two.”
