Everyone’s Saying The Same Thing About Ryan Gosling’s Oscar Nomination

If you’ve seen Barbie (and judging by its blockbuster popularity, you probably have), you’ll know that Ryan Gosling played Stereotypical Ken in the film.

His character, whose official job was “beach” and whose main hobby was “pining after Margot Robbie’s Barbie,” delighted audiences with his hilarious antics and, er, fascinating singing voice.

Ryan Gosling has been nominated for the 2024 Oscars awards for Best Supporting Actor as Ken. The song played by his character, I’m Just Ken, which is ― well ― all about Ken has been nominated for Best Original Song.

And while nobody’s doubting the actor’s hilarious performance (which was undeniably incredible, and definitely Oscar-worthy in our opinion), some on X (formerly Twitter) have noticed that Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, and Margot Robbie ― Barbie’s main lead and producer of the film ― have not received a Best Director or Best Actress nomination.

This, some point out, is ironic given the feminist message of the film.

Of course, America Ferrera did receive an equivalent nomination for her role as Gloria in the movie (she’s been nominated for Best Supporting Actress). Greta Gerwig’s screenplay, co-written with Noah Baumbach, did get nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And Margot Robbie is indirectly nominated for Best Picture via her production work.

Still, people on X thought the Best Actress and Best Director omissions were… interesting. Here are some responses:

Sean Penn Unleashes Expletive-Filled Tirade On Will Smith Over Oscars Slap

Sean Penn slammed Will Smith and wondered why the King Richard star still received applause at the 2022 Oscars after his violent outburst.

The Milk actor got “fucking furious,” according to Variety, during an interview with the outlet in which he discussed the Oscars’ refusal to allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to speak at the awards show that year.

“The Oscars producer thought, ‘Oh, he’s not light-hearted enough.’ Well, guess what you got instead? Will Smith!” said Penn, who shot a documentary about the war in Ukraine.

“I don’t know Will Smith. I met him once,” Penn said, adding that he “seemed very nice” and was excellent in King Richard, the biopic that landed Smith an Oscar for Best Actor.

“So why the fuck did you just spit on yourself and everybody else with this stupid fucking thing? Why did I go to fucking jail for what you just did? And you’re still sitting there? Why are you guys standing and applauding his worst moment as a person?” he said.

Penn was convicted in 1987 for assaulting an extra on the set of the movie Colors. He spent 33 days in jail.

Smith won an Oscar in 2022 after he slapped comedian Chris Rock onstage for making a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

He has since apologised and resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which banned him from attending the Oscars for 10 years. Rock did not press charges.

Penn, who has two Oscars of his own, told Variety he believed the incident would not have taken place if Zelenskyy had spoken at the event.

“Will Smith would never have left that chair to be part of stupid violence. It never would have happened,” he said.

Penn has a long history of violence himself. He was ordered to undergo anger management counselling in 2010 after he was accused of kicking a photographer and breaking his camera, in one of several altercations with paparazzi over the years.

He also faced a domestic assault charge during his marriage to pop legend Madonna, which ended in divorce in 1989. Both Madonna and Penn have since denied that Penn attacked her.

Austin Butler Shares ‘Bittersweet’ Reaction To Oscars Nomination Following Lisa Marie Presley’s Death

Austin Butler has admitted he’s feeling “bittersweet” to be in the running for his first Oscar, following the death of Lisa Marie Presley.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star had landed a nomination in the Best Actor category for his leading performance in the biopic Elvis.

However, following the death of the music legend’s daughter Lisa Marie earlier this month, Austin admitted he had mixed feelings about the accolade.

Speaking to Today With Hoda & Jenna shortly after the announcement, he said: “It’s sort of a bittersweet moment right now. because I think of how much I wish she was here right now to get to celebrate with me.”

“It’s the same thing I feel with Elvis,” he added “I wish that they could see these moments, you know?

“It’s just sort of strange to celebrate at a time of such deep grief. But I sort of think of it as a way to honour her. This is for her.”

She was laid to rest over the weekend, in a ceremony attended by Austin and his partner Kaia Gerber.

Austin previously paid his respects to the late singer-songwriter in an emotional statement, which read: “My heart is completely shattered for Riley, Finley, Harper and Priscilla at the tragic and unexpected loss of Lisa Marie.

“I am eternally grateful for the time I was lucky enough to be near her bright light and will forever cherish the quiet moments we shared.

“Her warmth, her love and her authenticity will always be remembered.”

Slap Or No Slap, Did Jada Really Need Will Smith To ‘Defend Her Honour’?

Just moments after it happened, Chris Rock knew his altercation with Will Smith at this year’s Oscars was going to make headlines, calling it “the greatest night in the history of television”.

For those yet to watch the clip, Rock made a joke at the expense of Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, when he said he was “looking forward to seeing GI Jane 2”.

Rock was apparently referencing the actress’ shaved head, which is a result of the hair loss condition, alopecia. Seconds later, Smith climbed onto the stage, slapped Rock and said: “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”

Some have excused Smith’s actions, saying he was simply “defending his wife’s honour” – but that phrase in itself has left others feeling uncomfortable.

Most of us will agree that there’s other ways to stand up for someone you love without resulting to physical violence. But it also raises the question: do women still need their “honour” defended by a man?

Plenty of people have praised the actor for stepping in to “defend” his wife.

But others have highlighted that Jada Pinkett Smith is a grown woman and perfectly capable of defending herself if she chooses to.

Later in the evening, Smith won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in the biopic King Richard.

In his acceptance speech, he apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees for his behaviour, adding: “I look like the crazy father, just like what they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”

But his words only sparked further criticism.

A lot of people agree that both men were in the wrong in this scenario, calling out toxic masculinity on either side.

But one thing is clear: the headlines this morning are all focused on Chris Rock and Will Smith. The woman at the heart of this story, Jada Pinkett Smith, has been erased in all the drama.
