Donald Trump on Thursday addressed wife Melania Trump’s apparent pro-choice stance on abortion by claiming that he’d told her, “I’m not going to tell you what to do.”
The comment drew ire on social media, however, as critics suggested the former president and current GOP nominee is trying to tell other women exactly what to do with their own bodies via his role in overturning Roe v. Wade, which has led to the banning of or restriction to abortion in multiple states.

“Oh, so Melanie gets to choose but not millions of other women. Got it,” journalist Jemele Hill wrote on X, formerly Twitter. Many other commenters said the same thing. See their comments below.

Melania Trump wrote in her upcoming memoir, “Melania,” that it is “imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government.”
“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body,” which is a belief she’s held “throughout my entire adult life,” she said.

Commentators speculated as to whether Melania Trump’s comments were a genuine break from the GOP’s increasingly extremist position on abortion rights or whether it was some kind of political ploy to gain moderate swing voters for her husband’s campaign. The former president’s own stance on abortion has, after all, changed many, many times over the years. He is now suggesting that individual states control the issue.
Fox News’ Bill Melugin asked Donald Trump on Thursday, “What’s your reaction to Melania’s memoir about championing abortion rights and reproductive freedom?”
The former president answered, “We spoke about it, and I said, ‘You have to write what you believe. I’m not going to tell you what to do. You have to write what you believe.’”
“She’s very beloved. People love our former first lady, I can tell you that,” he continued. “But I said, ‘You have to stick with your heart.’ I’ve said that to everybody, ‘You have to go with your heart.’ There are some people that are very, very far right on the issue, meaning without exceptions, and then there are other people who view it a little bit differently than that.”

Well, he wasn’t trying to control the crowd as much as he was trying to control any messaging about people leaving the event early.
Rally size is something that is important to Trump — so important that he became agitated during a presidential debate on September 10 when Democratic rival Kamala Harris bluntly said that “people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom.”
In Walker, Trump attempted to explain why rallygoers seemed to be leaving his event.
“The people that you see leaving? Because nobody ever leaves,” the former president said. “And when they do, I finish up quick.”
Trump then suggested that his staffers were to blame for the apparent departures, and claimed that people were actually lining up in the back for photos since he couldn’t pose for pictures earlier.
“These stupid people that are with me sometimes, they say, ‘Come on back,’” Trump said. “Thirty people, they get up and they go back. And they’re all lined up in the back waiting for me to take a picture because I couldn’t do it before.”
But Trump’s explanation for people leaving his rally wasn’t helped by the Harris campaign sharing purported video of (checks notes) people leaving his rally.
Not surprisingly, social media users soon mocked the former president for his questionable claim.
Former President Donald Trump spent his Sunday morning on social media blasting those supporting Vice President Kamala Harris for president in November ― including pop superstar Taylor Swift.
“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” the Republican candidate posted on his Truth Social platform, immediately after another post where he calls “rich, job creating people” who support Harris “STUPID.”
Swift, who was once known for avoiding public talk about politics, announced her much-anticipated endorsement of Harris just minutes after ABC News’ presidential debate ended on Tuesday night.

The endorsement came in the form of an Instagram post featuring the 14-time Grammy Award winner with one of her cats ― a nod to Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, who received widespread backlash after trying to belittle Democratic women who have kids as “childless cat ladies.”
In her massively influential endorsement of the Democratic ticket, the singer said Harris “fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
“I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift continued, adding that she was “heartened and impressed” that Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was chosen to be the candidate’s running mate because she said he has been “standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”

The president briefly placed a red “Trump 2024” cap over his own hat while greeting firefighters in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, during commemorations of the 9/11 terror attacks.
Right-wingers predictably freaked out on social media over the image.
Some suggested it was proof that Biden was experiencing cognitive decline while others touted the laughable claim that it showed he’d switched to supporting Trump over his own vice president, Kamala Harris, whom he endorsed after abandoning his reelection campaign.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates set the record straight on X, formerly Twitter. Bates wrote, “At the Shanksville Fire Station, @POTUS spoke about the country’s bipartisan unity after 9/11 and said we needed to get back to that.”
“As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it,” he added.
Donald Trump on Wednesday told people they have no choice but to vote for him, “even if you don’t like me.” (Watch the video below.)
The lighthearted plea during his Fox News town hall caught the attention of an observer who said he sounded “desperate.” Another commentator even accused the Republican nominee of “begging” for votes.
Host Sean Hannity replayed a 2019 pledge by Democratic foe Kamala Harris to ban fracking if she were president (although she has since changed her stance on the matter).
“Pennsylvania can’t take a chance that that answer is true,” Trump said, per Mediaite.
He predicted employment and economic disaster for the swing state without fracking.
“She’s not gonna allow it,” the former president said. “You can’t take the chance. You have no choice.”
“You’ve gotta vote for me,” he added, laughing. “You’ve gotta vote for me. Even if you don’t like me!”
One person offered a curt “no, thanks” while others on social media took a more analytical view of Trump’s plea:
Self-proclaimed “extremely stable genius” Donald Trump’s boast about his “very smart” late uncle — which the former president used to suggest that, by extension, meant he was exceptionally clever too — drew mockery on social media on Wednesday.
The former president and current Republican nominee, during a town hall with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, was bombastically bragging about how he “understood” nuclear weapons “maybe better than anybody” when he went off on a tangent about John Trump, his physicist and inventor uncle who was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for almost half a century.
“Very smart guy. We have a smart family. It’s nice to have a smart family,” Trump said, before pivoting back to America’s nuclear program.
And, as before, people on social media had thoughts:
A progressive veterans group went after “disgusting” Donald Trump this past week following the Republican nominee’s controversial stop at Arlington National Cemetery that included campaign staffers’ altercation with cemetery officials.
“Now, maybe the greatest insult of all, turning a military cemetery visit into a political stunt with cameras in tow,” said a narrator in a scathing ad from political action committee VoteVets.

The ad arrives after an Arlington official, during Trump’s visit to the cemetery at the invitation of some family members of military service members killed in the 2021 Kabul airport attack, was allegedly “pushed” aside by campaign staffers after informing them not to film part of the cemetery where recently fallen U.S. troops were buried.
Federal law prohibits “political campaign or election-related activities” within Army National Military Cemeteries, according to a statement from the cemetery.
Trump has since shared a campaign video featuring footage from his visit while a campaign spokesperson has denied that a staffer pushed an official, claiming they were “clearly suffering from a mental health episode.”
Trump used his Truth Social platform over the weekend to share clips of family members of fallen service members including one that described Trump and his team as “respectful” while another accused Harris of “playing politics.”
On Thursday, VoteVets ripped Trump over the Arlington visit after citing several instances where he insulted the military. The ad referred to Trump reportedly calling Americans killed in World War I “suckers” and “losers” as well as when he referred to avoiding sexually transmitted diseases as his “personal Vietnam.”
“Disgusting. Donald Trump, the grave markers veterans and military families drop a knee to are not your political props. They represent the heroes we’ve served alongside, men and women you could never measure up to, friends who lived and died by the oath we all swore to uphold,” the narrator declared.
The speaker continued: ”[It’s] something you will never understanding and why we’re doing our damndest to make sure no service member ever has to salute you as commander-in-chief ever again.”

A day after indicating some support for a referendum to protect abortion rights in Florida, Donald Trump said Friday he’s actually going to vote against it.
If passed, Amendment 4 would amend Florida’s constitution to restore abortion access until fetal viability ― typically around the 6-month mark. Florida currently bans abortion beyond the sixth week of gestation, with limited exceptions.

Abortion late in pregnancy is extremely rare and often happens because the fetus would not survive after birth or because of serious threats to the mother’s health.
Trump, a Florida voter as of 2020, then claimed that blue-state abortion laws allow for the homicide of newborn babies ― a lie he often repeats.
“Some of the states like Minnesota and other states have it where you could actually execute the baby after birth, and all of that stuff is unacceptable,” he said. “So I’ll be voting no for that reason.”
Trump reiterated that he thinks that Florida’s current ban is too restrictive, even though he boasted as recently as last year that “without me there would be no six weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks” bans.

In recent months, Trump has increasingly tried to appear moderate on abortion ― a matter that’s proven to be a losing issue for Republicans since the fall of the Supreme Court precedent under Roe v. Wade in 2022. Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign has repeatedly told voters not to take his more relaxed stance on the issue seriously, pointing to his long record of opposing abortion access.
In response to Trump’s remarks Friday, Harris said he’s clearly aligned himself with the anti-abortion movement.
“Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant,” she said.
“Of course he thinks it’s a ‘beautiful thing’ that women in Florida and across the country are being turned away from emergency rooms, face life-threatening situations and are forced to travel hundreds of miles for the care they need,” she continued.
“President Trump has not yet said how he will vote on the ballot initiative in Florida, he simply reiterated that he believes six weeks is too short,” campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a news release.
Measures like the one in Florida have passed in numerous other states since the fall of Roe. In all seven states that have put abortion questions before voters, including red states like Kansas, Kentucky and Montana and swing states Ohio and Michigan, voters have sided with abortion rights.
And to make sure the crowd knew she was serious, she did it in her “teacher glasses.”
The moment happened while Walz, the Minnesota governor and Kamala Harris’ running mate, was talking about a recently resurfaced comment by Vance criticising Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, for trying to “brainwash” children while not having “a single child” of her own (she is a stepmother to two kids).
Considering the Walzes struggled with fertility issues before having two children, she didn’t take too kindly to the Ohio senator’s hint that people who haven’t given birth to children shouldn’t be teachers.

And she let him have it.
“JD Vance said he was ‘really disturbed’ by teachers who don’t have biological children,” Gwen Walz said before mentioning her own personal story.
“For a long time, Tim and I were teachers who struggled with infertility. We were only able to start a family because of fertility treatments. We do not take kindly to folks like JD Vance telling us when or how to start our families,” she emphasised.
She then paused to put on a pair of glasses.
“So let me use my teacher voice. Mr. Vance, how about you mind your own business?”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he was “suspending” his independent presidential bid and endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump on Friday, a day after Kennedy withdrew from the ballot in Arizona.
Kennedy was expected to announce he was withdrawing from the race at a speech in Phoenix on Friday afternoon, but a Pennsylvania court filing earlier in the day confirmed he would withdraw from that state’s ballot and endorse Trump.

In a bit of a twist, Kennedy said he was not “terminating” his campaign, only “suspending” it, and encouraged his supporters who are not in battleground states to nevertheless vote for him.
In 10 battleground states, however, including Arizona and Pennsylvania, he’s removing his name from the ballot and urged voters not to vote for him, fearing he would play the role of a spoiler candidate by siphoning votes away from Trump.
“In an honest system, I believe I would have won the election,” Kennedy told the crowd. “In a system with open debates, with fair primaries … and with a truly independent media untainted by government propaganda and censorship, everything would be different.”

Kennedy thanked the campaign’s volunteers for helping the ticket make the ballot on a state-by-state basis, navigating an “insurmountable tangle of arbitrary rules for collecting signatures.”
Then, veering into conspiracy, Kennedy embarked on a long attack accusing the Democratic Party of colluding with the media to undertake a ”systemic attack on democracy.”
Kennedy also returned to familiar themes from his campaign, criticising ultra-processed foods and toxic chemicals for causing a wide variety of physical and mental health issues, from diabetes to various cancers to attention deficit disorder.
“We are mass-poisoning all of our children and adults,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy’s endorsement was immediately disavowed by his extended family, who called it “a betrayal” and endorsed the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Govenor Tim Walz.
“We believe in Harris and Walz,” Kennedy’s siblings said in a statement. “Our brother Bobby’s decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story.”

Rumors about the campaign had swirled since Tuesday, when RFK Jr.’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, said on a podcast that the two were exploring their options for the race.
“One is staying in, forming that new party but we run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency because we draw votes from Trump or we draw somehow more votes from Trump,” Shanahan told Tom Bilyeu, the host of “Impact Theory.”
“Or we walk away right now and join forces with Donald Trump, and we walk away from that, and we explain to our base why we’re making this decision,” she continued.
The Washington Post previously reported that Kennedy asked for a high-level role in the Trump administration in exchange for his endorsement. Trump signalled an openness to the possibility in a CNN interview earlier this week.
The long-shot candidate saw national polling numbers as high as 16% this spring, though they’ve fallen below 5% in recent months as the campaign failed to find purchase.
