The story behind Dancing In The Moonlight

Speaking to the music journalist Mike Morsch, Sherman Kelly revealed that the song was written after he and his girlfriend had been attacked and left for dead by the notorious Fountain Gang in St. Croix.

Once they had finally crawled their way to hospital and received treatment, Sherman recalled overhearing doctors talking: “I woke up to the sound of my hospital roommate screaming in pain. Finally the screaming stopped and I heard two doctors talking about him. ‘That’s it, he’s gone,’ said one doctor about the other patient.

″‘What about him, you think he’s gonna make it?’ And the other doctor said, ‘No, I doubt it.’ I realised they were talking about me.”

Of course, Sherman did make it and quite literally lived to tell the tale.

Once he was home, he started writing the verses that would soon become Dancing In The Moonlight.

“I envisioned an alternate reality, the dream of a peaceful and joyous celebration of life. It was just me imagining a better world than the one I had just experienced in St. Croix.

“It was amazing. People liked the song right from the start. I liked it, but I wouldn’t have predicted that it would become a big hit.”

And that it did.

Since being written in 1969, the song has been covered 16 times and is a firm favourite among pop music fans.

As Morsch said: “An unspeakably traumatic experience that almost cost him his life had turned into a beautiful song.”

Back in 2013, Sophie danced her way to the Strictly finals, coming in fourth with her dancing partner Brendan Cole but her appearance on the show came at a heavy price, with the expectations weighing heavily on her.

In her 2021 book Spinning Plates, the Murder On The Dancefloor singer said: “We were asked questions such as: ‘Is this the best thing you’ve ever done?’, ‘How incredible has your dance partner been?’, ‘What will you do to fill the hole after Strictly?’

“And I had the epiphany that, oh my God it’s like a cult! Trigger words and the constant repetition of how much it must mean to you.”

While she was massively grateful and proud of her time on the show, she spoke frankly about the difficulties it came with.

So, a return to the Strictly ballroom probably wasn’t quite what anybody would expect.

However, fans were thrilled to see her back on the sparkly stage.

Strictly Come Dancing is on BBC One on Saturday evenings at 6.25pm.

The second instalment of Ryan Murphy’s polarising true crime series centres around Erik and Lyle Menéndez, the brothers who are currently serving life sentences for the murder of their parents in the late 1980s.

On Friday afternoon, the Official Charts Company confirmed that a surge in streams to Milli Vanilli’s I’m Gonna Miss You and Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over had led to them both re-entering the top 40 this week.

Don’t Dream It’s Over is currently at 37, while I’m Gonna Miss You is at 40.

This isn’t the first time this year that a popular show or film has resulted in an old song surging back into the charts, though.

Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menéndez Story is now streaming on Netflix.

Strictly Come Dancing Introduces Exciting New Twist For This Year’s Series

Strictly Come Dancing has announced an exciting new themed week for this year’s series as part of the show’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Next month, each of the celebrity contestants and their professional partners will be performing a routine inspired by their personal musical heroes in the show’s first ever Icons Week.

A BBC press release explained: “In this brand-new special week, which will be part of this series and beyond, the remaining couples will take to the ballroom floor to honour music icons.

“Our Strictly Come Dancing stars will pay tribute to some of the most recognisable and influential people in the music industry. This new week will be dedicated to music legends from across the decades.”

The special live show will air on Saturday 2 November, a week after Strictly’s annual Halloween special.

Strictly’s regular themed weeks – Blackpool Week and Musicals Week – will also still go ahead as usual later in the series.

For now, the BBC is keeping each of the celebs’ Icons picks under wraps, but it’s been revealed that the episode will also feature a special routine paying homage to Beyoncé, in which professional dancer Johannes Radebe will take centre stage.

Retired themes from past seasons of Strictly include Around The World week and BBC 100 Week, in which the contestants performed to theme tunes from iconic BBC shows to commemorate the broadcaster’s centennial.

Last week, the first themed week of the series got underway, with the remaining 14 contestants (minus Nick Knowles, who was absent from the live show due to an injury) paying homage to everything from Barbie and Harry Potter to Mrs Doubtfire and Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Toyah Willcox and Neil Jones wound up becoming the second pair to be sent home, after landing in the dance-off once again, this time alongside football legend Paul Merson and Karen Hauer.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday 12 October on BBC One at 6.20pm.

Lady Gaga Makes Huge Musical Announcement That’s Made Us Even More Excited For The Joker Sequel

What could be more exciting than Lady Gaga tapping into her most eccentric side to play Harley Quinn in a new musical, we here you ask?

How about a new album from the Grammy winner inspired by her performance in the film?

Gaga has been teasing something big in relation to her stint in Joker: Folie À Deux for the past few days, with cryptic posts on her Instagram featuring messages like “I’m ready for my interview”, “no duct tape no mission” and “moondust gets everywhere”.

And she confirmed this to be the case on Tuesday afternoon when she revealed plans to release Harley Quinn, a “companion album to Joker: Folie À Deux” this Friday.

The album’s tracklist reveals the album will include a mix of covers featured in the Joker sequel – including songs popularised by Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and The Carpenters – as well as original songs inspired by Gaga’s interpretation of Harley Quinn.

However, this song will not feature on Gaga’s album, nor will it appear on Harlequin.

Joker: Folie À Deux hits cinemas on Friday 4 October.

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour Names Classic Song He Won’t Play, Saying It’s ‘Terrifying And Violent’

Rock legend David Gilmour of Pink Floyd is about to embark on his first solo tour in eight years ― but told Mojo Magazine there are a few iconic songs that fans shouldn’t expect to hear on his setlist.

“There are songs from the past that I no longer feel comfortable singing,” Gilmour told the magazine.

“I love Run Like Hell. I loved the music I created for it, but all that ‘You’d better run, run, run ….’ I now find that all rather, I don’t know … a bit terrifying and violent.”

He added that he won’t be playing Money from the band’s landmark Dark Side Of The Moon album, either.

“Another Brick In The Wall is another one I shan’t be doing,” he continued. “I don’t think I’ve done that with my own band, but I certainly did it in the post-Roger Pink Floyd, against my better judgment.”

Gilmour has been locked in an on-again, off-again feud with former bandmate Roger Waters, who was Pink Floyd’s primary songwriter during the group’s classic period.

In recent interviews, Gilmour has indicated little interest in revisiting the tracks that were mainly written by Waters. Gilmour told Rolling Stone over the summer that he might only do “one or two things” from that era.

In the new interview, he suggested it might go beyond the one or two. He told Mojo he’ll stick to Pink Floyd songs “that are essentially my music, and I feel some ownership of,” naming specifically Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here and Shine On You Crazy Diamond as tunes fans may hear during the upcoming tour.

He didn’t name any songs beyond those, but his focus on music that’s essentially his own would mean fans may hear tracks from the Pink Floyd albums A Momentary Lapse Of Reason and The Division Bell, which came out after Waters quit the band, as well as Gilmour’s solo work.

Gilmour’s tour, in support of his highly acclaimed new solo album, Luck And Strange, began on Friday with a rehearsal show in the UK before moving on to Rome, London, Los Angeles and New York.

Chappell Roan Reveals Original Title For Good Luck, Babe! And We’re So Happy She Changed Her Mind

Chappell Roan has opened up about the writing process of her signature hit Good Luck, Babe!.

While the success of older songs like Hot To Go! and Pink Pony Club has helped boost the US singer’s profile in the last year, it’s 2024 hit Good Luck, Babe! that really put her on the map.

As it turns out, though, the song was very nearly called something very different.

Speaking to Konbini, Chappell recalled: “Originally, it was not called Good Luck, Babe!. It was originally called Good Luck, Jane!, but my co-writer and I kept getting into arguments about it. So, it became Good Luck, Babe!.”

It’s fair to say fans were pretty happy with Chappell’s final decision:

When Konbini’s interviewer pointed out that the “babe” in the title made the song more ambiguous, meaning Chappell could even be singing about herself, she agreed: “Exactly. I wrote it because I fell in love with this girl, and she started dating this fucking loser of a guy! And I was like, ‘OK, bitch. Sure. You’re not gay. Good luck with that!’.

“And then, it kind of turned into, ‘oh, I think this is a story about me’ – especially the bridge, only dating men prior to the past couple of years, and it would have been horrible to wake up in the middle of the night being like, ‘oh my god, what have I done?’, thinking about that girl that I fell in love with.”

Good Luck, Babe! has proved to be Chappell’s biggest hit to date, peaking at number six in the US and number two here in the UK.

Even more impressively, she managed it without shooting an accompanying music video, and it doesn’t sound like the Red Wine Supernova singer is in any rush to change that.

However, she has brought the song to life visually on several occasions, including an elaborate performance on Jimmy Fallon’s US talk show, and a show-stopping rendition of it while making her VMAs stage debut.

Pharrell Williams has revealed that he would choose his words differently if he made Britney Spears’ hit I’m A Slave 4 U in 2024.

The Grammy winner – who co-wrote and produced the track with Chad Hugo as the production duo The Neptunes – recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the word “slave” is not one to “play with these days”.

“And there’s many different angles, right? Obviously, what my people and my DNA and my ancestors had to endure and overcome, but then there’s also all the atrocity that happens in human trafficking every day,” Pharrell said. “So, no, that’s not something I would say.”

He added that there are “a lot” of songs that show “what was contextually acceptable at one time is no longer acceptable” in another.

“But I think that’s for the better,” he said.

Pharrell continued: “I think there are a lot of songs where I wouldn’t say half the things that I said before. As the time changes, so does mentality and hopefully it evolves to a better place. And it’s not about being politically correct, it’s about being universally aware.”

Britney’s song, which inspired an iconic performance at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, was initially meant for Janet Jackson before it was passed off to the Toxic singer.

The track ushered in a new era for Britney at the time – and marked The Neptunes’ first global hit.

“She was eager and ready to transition. And I put a fire under that notion. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how you feeling? OK, let’s put this fire under that. Let’s go,’” Pharrell said of recording the song with Britney.

The US outlet noted that Britney appears in Morgan Neville’s upcoming documentary film Piece By Piece, a look at Pharrell’s life and career through Lego animation, although the artist revealed that he hasn’t spoken to the pop icon in “maybe 10-plus years”.

“I think I’ve seen her in the elevator one time. I think we were all going into the same place or something,” he said. “I can remember exactly where it was, and she had her sunglasses on, and I was like, ‘I know that’s Britney.’ Maybe she doesn’t remember me. That’s fine.’”

Aside from I’m A Slave 4 U, The Neptunes also worked with the singer on her songs Boys and Why Should I Be Sad. The latter was their last collaboration, from her 2007 album Blackout.

Oasis Set The Record Straight Amid Widespread Glastonbury 2025 Rumours

Oasis have dismissed speculation that they will be making an appearance at next year’s Glastonbury festival.

Despite the initial announcement about Liam and Noel Gallagher’s upcoming reunion shows specifying they would mark fans’ only opportunity to see them live in 2025, the last few days have seen rumours emerging suggesting the group could be putting in a performance on the Pyramid Stage next year.

However, they have now spoken out to insist this will not be the case.

“Despite media speculation, Oasis will not be playing Glastonbury 2025 or any other festivals next year,” they said in a statement.

“The only way to see the band perform will be on their Oasis Live ’25 World Tour.”

It’s perhaps worth pointing out that earlier in the summer, Noel made headlines when he slated the most recent Glastonbury line-up, for which he ended up facing a huge backlash.

After literal years of theorising about whether the estranged Gallagher brothers would ever put their differences aside and perform together again, it was confirmed on Tuesday morning that Oasis would be doing a string of gigs around the UK and Ireland in 2025.

So far, a total of 15 live shows have been announced, beginning in Cardiff in July.

Following this, the tour will travel to Manchester, London and Edinburgh, with two last shows scheduled for Dublin on 16 and 17 August.

Alongside the announcement, Oasis said:

“The guns have fallen silent.

“The stars have aligned.

“The great wait is over.

“Come see.

“It will not be televised.”

18 Artists Who’ve Hit Out At Donald Trump For Using Their Songs

With just a few short months until the US presidential election, it’s not unfair to say that Donald Trump isn’t exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to popular musicians who want to endorse him.

In fact, in the last few weeks alone, a number of artists have spoken out against the former president for featuring their music in his campaign videos or playing it at his rallies.

This is nothing new, though.

Over the years, plenty of singers and bands have hit back at Trump for using their music without permission.

Here’s a look at some of the most high-profile examples…

Beyoncé

In August 2024, Trump’s spokesperson Steven Cheung shared a video of the Republican candidate accompanied by Beyoncé‘s song Freedom, which has become an anthem of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign in the last few weeks.

Seemingly unhappy with her song’s usage, reports claimed that Beyoncé had issued the Trump campaign with a cease-and-desist letter, and it didn’t take long before the video in question disappeared from Cheung’s social media page without comment.

Céline Dion

When Trump played Céline Dion’s My Heart Will Go On at a rally in August 2024, the Grammy winner responded with a blistering statement that made headlines the world over.

“In no way is this use authorised, and Céline Dion does not endorse this or any similar use,” the statement said.

Alluding to the fact the song is most popular for its associations with Titanic, the statement concluded: “And really, THAT song?”

Sinéad O’Connor

The family of the late Sinéad O’Connor were understandably upset after Nothing Compares 2 U was played at various campaign stops in March 2024.

“It is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards her fellow human beings,” the Irish singer’s estate said.

“It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of Nothing Compares 2 U at his political rallies. [It is] no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil’.”

Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr, best known for his work as lead guitarist in The Smiths, was suitably unimpressed to discover the group’s song Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want had been played at a Trump rally.

“I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now,” he tweeted.

The musician has been similarly critical when Conservative MPs have tried to align themselves with The Smiths’ music.

Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones threatened to sue Trump back in 2020, after he used their songs at his election rallies in spite of cease-and-desist directives.

Their 1969 hit You Can’t Always Get What You Want was a frequent choice at Trump’s events, with the band confirming music rights organisation BMI had already notified the then-president’s campaign explaining that the unauthorised use of their songs would break its licensing agreement.

Prior to that, th Rollinge Stones had already complained about Trump using their music during his previous campaign in 2016.

Village People

Also in 2020, Village People’s lead singer Victor Willis asked the president to stop playing songs like Macho Man and Y.M.C.A. if he went through with threats to deploy the military on peaceful protesters in America.

Months later, Trump was seen dancing to Y.M.C.A. at a rally, with Victor telling BBC News: “I don’t endorse Trump, I’ve never endorsed Trump, nor has the Village People.”

When asked what he thought about Trump’s dancing, he laughed and added: “Donald Trump does what Donald Trump does. I’ve never seen him actually put his hands up and make the Y.M.C.A. He’s changed it to M.A.G.A. or something.”

Linkin Park

Linkin Park sent a cease-and-desist letter to Trump when he retweeted a campaign-style video featuring the group’s track In The End back in July 2020.

The pro-Trump video was posted on X (then still known as Twitter) by White House staff member Dan Scavino, which was then shared on the president’s page.

Making their stance explicitly clear, a message was then posted on the band’s Twitter page, which said: “Linkin Park did not and does not endorse Trump, nor authorise his organisation to use any of our music. A cease-and-desist has been issued.”

X later told Sky News that they respond to “valid copyright complaints sent to us by a copyright owner or their authorised representatives”.

Tom Petty

The family of the late Tom Petty issued a cease-and-desist order after his song I Won’t Back Down was used at a Trump rally in June 2020.

They said in a statement: “Trump was in no way authorised to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind.

“Both the late Tom Petty and his family firmly stand against racism and discrimination of any kind. Tom Petty would never want a song of his to be used in a campaign of hate. He liked to bring people together.’’

Neil Young

The singer announced he was intending to sue Trump in August 2020 after one of his songs was played against his wishes during the president campaign rallies despite earlier warnings.

The copyright infringement complaint that was filed read: “This complaint is not intended to disrespect the rights and opinions of American citizens, who are free to support the candidate of their choosing.

“However, Plaintiff in good conscience cannot allow his music to be used as a ‘theme song’ for a divisive, un-American campaign of ignorance and hate.”

Prince

Prince’s estate hit out at the US president after Purple Rain was used at a rally in Minneapolis, the late singer’s home town, in October 2019.

The late singer’s song was played despite the Trump campaign having previously pledged not to do so a year earlier, following its use in the 2016 election race.

“The Prince estate will never give permission to President Trump to use Prince’s songs,” the estate wrote on Twitter, also sharing the letter the president’s representatives that confirmed it would not use Prince’s music “in connection with activities going forward”.

Brian Wilson and Al Jardine

Beach Boys co-founders Brian Wilson and Al Jardine wanted fans to know they were not part of a fundraising effort for Trump featuring the current incarnation of the band.

In 2020, the Beach Boys performed at a Trump fundraiser in Newport Beach, California. However, that was the current touring version of the group led by Mike Love ― the band’s other surviving co-founder, who has often been at loggerheads with his old bandmates, a Trump supporter.

A spokesperson for Brian and Al told Variety at the time: “We have absolutely nothing to do with the Trump benefit today in Newport Beach. Zero. We didn’t even know about it and were very surprised to read about it in the Los Angeles Times.”

Black Sabbath

In 2019, Sharon Osbourne blasted the US leader for using the Black Sabbath track Crazy Train in a campaign video, and making it clear that Trump was “forbidden” from using her husband Ozzy’s music in future videos or at his rallies.

She went on to suggest that tracks by Kanye West, Kid Rock or Ted Nugent – all of whom have publicly endorsed Trump in the past – might be more appropriate. musical choices for him

Rihanna

Rihanna issued a withering response after learning that her song Don’t Stop The Music was being played at a pro-Trump event in 2018.

She wrote on X: “Not for much longer… me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up!”

Adele

Adele took umbrage with Donald Trump during his 2016 election campaign, when Rolling In The Deep was used repeatedly at his rallies.

In a short but to-the-point statement, her spokesperson said: “Adele has not given permission for her music to be used for any political campaigning.”

R.E.M.

Adele’s statement was somewhat more subdued than R.E.M., who were less-than-thrilled to learn that Trump had been blasting their tune, It’s The End Of The World As We Know It at his rallies prior to the 2016 election.

Frontman Michael Stipe issued a statement telling the then-presidential candidate to “go fuck himself”, making it clear he wanted nothing to do with his ideologies.

Aerosmith

Steven Tyler sent Donald Trump a cease-and-desist letter when he first started using Dream On at his campaigns in 2015.

True to form, Trump responded on X that he’d already found a “better song” to replace Dream On, adding: “Steven Tyler got more publicity on his song request than he’s gotten in ten years. Good for him!”

Queen

If anyone was going to try and clumsily appropriate the message of We Are The Champions in their political campaign, it was going to be Donald Trump, right?

Guitarist Brian May assured one fan in 2016: “I will make sure we take what steps we can to dissociate ourselves from Donald Trump’s unsavoury campaign.”

However, in August 2020, the band admitted it had been “an uphill battle” to get the Trump campaign to stop using their songs.

Isaac Hayes

Shortly after Celiné Dion’s immediately-iconic message to Trump, the family of Isaac Hayes – who died in 2008 – also took issue with the presidential hopeful for playing Hold On, I’m Comin’, a Sam & Dave song written by the singer and actor, at his rallies.

Isaac’s son, Isaac Hayes III, shared a legal letter on social media, revealing he and his family were planning to sue Trump for 134 counts of “copyright infringement”, and claiming they had previously requested multiple times that the Republican candidate not play Hold On I’m Comin’ at his rallies.
