Not only did the British-Australian actor earn a Bafta for her role in Martin Scorsese’s 1993 film The Age Of Innocence, but she’s appeared in everything from critically-acclaimed dramas to family comedies and more.

Now aged 82, Miriam is as popular and in-demand as ever. We’ve taken a look back through her career to bring you the facts you never knew about the true showbiz icon…
Her on-screen credits go back to 1965
After starting out in theatre, Miriam’s first TV role credit was the 1965 British anthology series Theatre 625, in which she appeared as Rita in the episode Enter Solly Gold.
Her first ever big screen role came a few years later, when she played a minor role in the 1969 British comedy A Nice Girl Like Me.

She competed on University Challenge long before she was famous
In typical Miriam fashion, the future Bafta winner dropped an F-bomb in frustration when she botched an answer, which she has long claimed to be the first case of anyone doing so on the BBC.
Then, of course, she dropped another f-bomb on the BBC almost 60 years later

Miriam has earned herself a reputation of being a delightfully unpredictable interviewee over the years.
On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme last year, she bluntly said that she wanted to say “fuck you, bastard” to the newly-appointed chancellor Jeremy Hunt, who appeared in the hotseat just before her, not realising she was broadcasting to the nation.
Miriam appeared in the original London production of Wicked opposite Idina Menzel, Helen Dallimore, Adam Garcia and The Young Ones actor Nigel Planer.
The iconic retelling of The Wizard Of Oz opened at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in September 2006, with Miriam appearing as headmistress Madame Morrible. On opening night Miriam praised the “wonderful” talent in the cast that she was “lucky enough to share the stage with”.

While making another eventful appearance on This Morning back in 2021 – during which she said she really was trying to be on her best behaviour – it didn’t take long before Miriam brought out one of her trademark saucy anecdotes.
Discussing her various voice acting roles with presenters Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, she recalled being asked to make the original Cadbury Caramel bunny “sexier”.
Phillip then quipped: “Didn’t you possibly get that job out of a couple of other tapes that you might have done before that were slightly less family orientated?”
After scolding the presenter for his mischievous prompt, Miriam confessed: “I did a couple of sex tapes. Sexy Sonia: Leaves From My Schoolgirl Diary, that was one of them.
“But I have to stress, they were audio tapes. They were not visual. And they were very exhausting, because when you’re simulating orgasm, as all of you out there know, it’s tiring, and you get a headache. It’s not a question of having a headache at the beginning, you get a headache at the end.”
There was also one other particularly interesting voice acting gig…
She’s not just a thespian of the stage and screen – Miriam once voiced an advert for pile ointment Anusol.
The striking ad used the knotted top of a pink balloon and a doughnut to represent the anus, making for a memorable commercial gig for the actor. Give it a listen for yourself here.
She once did some creative thinking to cheer up an exhausted Martin Scorsese on the set of Age Of Innocence
It seems that truly nothing could phase Miriam. When she was starring in her Bafta-winning role as Mrs Mingott in The Age Of Innocence, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder, she decided to make light of a particularly long morning on set.
Miriam said that she “felt it was my duty to raise their spirits” in her memoir Oh Miriam (per The Independent).
“And without further ado, I pulled up my maroon ‘Dickens’ Universe’ T-shirt and my proud and thrusting breasts, released from any confining brassiere (I have always hated confinement) cascaded out of my clothes, in a snowy Victoria Falls of mammarial magnificence.”
She said the crew were “stunned” before bursting into laughter, insisting that Marty has never forgotten her display.

“Many years later, he said to me, ‘I remember that hair and make-up parade most particularly.’”
She’s not shy about speaking out when it comes to her political views
When she’s not turning the air blue during her numerous media appearances, Miriam can be found launching scathing attacks on the government.
She called Boris Johnson a clown back in 2021, and also had strong words for former president Donald Trump, stating: “He is dangerous, I think he’s a fascist, and I think it was obvious from the beginning that he was going to be like that… I just long to see the back of him.”
Her outspoken opinions haven’t always been without controversy, though. In 2020 she sparked 494 complaints to the TV watchdog Ofcom when she admitted on the Channel 4 show that she’d initially wanted then-prime minister Johnson to die when he was hospitalised with coronavirus.
“When you get old, your skin will wrinkle, your body will droop and your cunt will get dry. You’ve got to have other things on the menu, so to speak,” she told HuffPost UK.
While she’s not always had the most positive things to say about her own weight throughout her life, she described her post-70 renaissance as “absolutely gorgeous”.
She’s not exactly a big fan of Harry Potter, despite starring in the series
Speaking to a fan in a Cameo video message, she said: “I understand you and Chris are huge Harry Potter fans,” before adding, “Here’s the thing, I’m not.”
She continued: “I’m not against it, I’m just not interested. I’ve never seen a film. I’ve never seen the books, I’ve never read them. I just pocket the money when it comes and I’m very grateful for it.”
She’s voiced many animated TV shows
Miriam’s acting CV is full of roles in various animated shows and films, including Family Guy (voicing Maggie Smith’s eye), Flushed Away and American Dad.
Plus, remember the matchmaker in the 1998 animated Mulan? That was also Miriam.
Her favourite snacks will surprise you
Miriam has shared on numerous occasions that she loves to snack on raw onions. Not only that, but she’ll eat them like an apple – as demonstrated in a video for Vogue, where she revealed that she always carries one in her bag.

Her holds nothing back on her Cameo account
Cameo has gained popularity in recent years, which lets fans purchase messages from their favourite celebs. While many actors will share a brief ‘happy birthday’ or ‘congratulations’ with viewers, Miriam’s has gone wildly off script in the past.
After previous comments and speculation, the actress has confirmed via her new book “Oh Miriam!: Stories from an Extraordinary Life” that she is the voice of “Beep The Meep” in Doctor Who’s 60th Specials! pic.twitter.com/0Jjvv4bLuw
In a statement to the BBC, she said: “I’m relieved I got to work on Doctor Who before I died. With sci-fi you never know. Thank you for making an old woman very happy.”
Over the years,Miriam Margoyles has accumulated an eclectic array of acting roles, including performances in big-name franchises and even a Bafta win. However, what many people might not realise is that she is also a renowned voice actor.
The Call the Midwife star has lent her voice to adverts for brands such as Cadbury, PG Tips and Dolmio in her day, as well as contributing to audiobooks, animated features and even audio porn in the past.

Ahead of Miriam’slong-awaited debut in Doctor Who, where she’s set to voice Meep in the 60th anniversary special episode, we’re looking back at some of the more unexpected places her voice has popped up in over the years…
Back in the mid-90s, Miriam moved into the world of movie voice acting when she played Fly, a sheepdog, in the beloved farmyard classic, Babe.
Based on Dick King-Smith’s book, The Sheep-Pig, the comedy-drama followed a young farm pig who wanted to do the work of a sheepdog.

The wholesome film exceeded expectations and went on to be nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Visual Effects. Miriam also reprised her role in the sequel, Babe: Pig in the City.

In this Roald Dahl adaptation, Miriam voiced the Glowworm as well as appearing on screen as James’ Aunt Sponge.
The musical film combined stop-motion animation and live-action segments and featured a star-studded cast including Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Lumley, David Thewlis, Susan Sarandon and Jane Leeves.
Though it wasn’t a huge box office success, it was a firm favourite with fans of the original novel and with critics.

It seems surprising that Miriam’s voice hasn’t been featured more in Disney films, with her sole credit with the studio coming in 1998, when she voiced The Matchmaker in the animated movie Mulan.
Agents of Shield star Ming-Na Wen held the titular role of the young heroine, while the cast also featured voice performances from Eddie Murphy, BD Wong and Miguel Ferrer.
The beloved classic garnered a Golden Globe award, an Oscar nomination and took home several Annie Awards. There was a much-less-revered direct-to-video sequel, Mulan II, in 2004 (in which Miriam reprised her role as the Matchmaker), before the live-action remake in 2020.

Alongside Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, and Nicole Kidman, Miriam played Mrs Astrakhan in the computer-animated musical, Happy Feet.
The film followed Mumble, an emperor penguin who is extremely talented at tap dance, and went onto become the sixth highest-grossing movie of 2006 and landed the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
However, it was apparently one of the more forgetful projects for Miriam.
Asked about her character during an interview on The Graham Norton Show years later, she responded: “I can’t remember… I don’t know, I didn’t watch it.”

In 2006, Miriam also voiced another animated character in Flushed Away.
Though the film didn’t garner the audience or box-office success it expected, it racked up a host of nominations during awards season and boasted a star-studded cast, featuring Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Bill Nighy.

Again, when asked on Graham Norton’s chat show about the movie, she struggled to remember who she played in the film: “I did Flushed Away… I don’t know what I was either… a piece of shit, I should think.”
Early Man (2018)
Over a decade later, Miriam worked with the Aardman Animation team again, but this time on a classic stop-motion, akin to Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit.
The actor voiced Queen Oofeefa, the queen of the Bronze Age City in Early Man, who sent out Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) to decimate the Stone Age cavemen.
As with most of Aardman’s projects, it boasted an impressive cast list featuring Eddie Redmayne, Maisie Williams, Timothy Spall, Rob Brydon and Richard Ayoade. Sadly, it was the least commercially successful instalment for the studio, but still an enjoyable family film.
Alongside her film and TV work, Miriam lent her voice to the animated brown rabbit in the famous Cadbury Caramel Bunny advert in the 1980s.
The iconic ad character appeared in a long series of ads back in the day, usually encouraging various woodland pals to “take it easy” in her dulcet tones, while enjoying a slab of chocolate .

After her success with Cadbury, Miriam became a firm favourite for voice roles in TV adverts.
It will probably have gone over most viewers’ heads that she plays the role of “Mama” Dolmio’s ads, where the Italian family tucks into a hearty meal of Bolognese, made, of course, with Dolmio sauce. It’s a small, but memorable entry to an already-impressive CV.

In her early years, Miriam took on an alter ego “Sexy Sonia” as she lent her voice to read audio pornography.
She explained to The Mirror: “I recorded a soft-porn audio called Sexy Sonia: Leaves From My Schoolgirl Notebook… it was one of my first ever shows.
“It was for sale in sex shops and one day I went into Ann Summers and told the man behind the counter I was Sexy Sonia.

“He was very distressed and told me to keep my voice down because he didn’t want people to know she was this short, fat, and rather unattractive person.”
On This Morning, Miriam elaborated that the recording “was just a nasty episode which people could take home and pleasure themselves with”.
However, she stopped recording the series after one episode as she found it “exhausting”.
She continued: “You have to keep breathing heavily to simulate orgasm – as many women have to anyway. I found it very exhausting. I came home with a headache. I don’t know what the engineer thought! I put my whole soul into it.”
“Moonlighting” creator Glenn Gordon Caron has shared an update on Bruce Willis’ health this week, telling the New York Post that the actor is “not totally verbal” amid his battle with frontotemporal dementia.
Caron, a friend of the 68-year-old actor, explained that Willis still knows who he is during his visits but noted some changes to him.

“My sense is the first one to three minutes he knows who I am,” he said.
“[Willis] used to be a voracious reader — he didn’t want anyone to know that — and he’s not reading now. All those language skills are no longer available to him, and yet he’s still Bruce.”
He continued: “When you’re with him, you know that he’s Bruce, and you’re grateful that he’s there, but the joie de vivre is gone.”
Caron said he’s talked with him and the actor’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, while maintaining a “casual relationship” with his three older children.
“I have tried very hard to stay in his life. He’s an extraordinary person,” added Caron.
“The thing that makes [his disease] so mind-blowing is [that] if you’ve ever spent time with Bruce Willis, there is no one who had any more joie de vivre than he. He loved life and … just adored waking up every morning and trying to live life to its fullest.”
In a recent appearance on the “Today” show, his wife noted the challenges that come with dementia.
“It’s hard on the person diagnosed. It’s also hard on the family. And that is no different for Bruce, or myself, or our girls. And when they say that this is a family disease, it really is,” said Emma Heming Willis, who shared that it’s “hard to know” if Willis is aware of his condition.

Munya Chawawa is famed for his satirical hot takes on the latest news, pop culture and politics, and this week’s instalment pokes fun at one hilarious element of Drake’s new song.
In his single, First Person Shooter, Drake lists a host of women’s names, which of course, is a common theme across smash-hits in all genres from Mambo Number 5 to Shania Twain’s Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?.
Yet, Munya was quick to point out that in Britain the names that Drake lists of women who are “packed in this phone like some sardines / and they send me naked pictures” are more likely to belong to your Nan.
In a reel on Instagram on Wednesday, Munya said: “As a British person the funniest part of Drake’s album is hearing him list these names as Big Bad B’s. Nadine, Justine, Pauline, Claudine, Kathleen.”
Before he asked: “How has everyone nan been mentioned in a Drake song?”
Munya went on to joke that “as a rule, in Britain, Pauline doesn’t shake nyash” and “Nadine, Christine, Justine” sound more like he “listed GP receptionists.”
“There was a dinner lady at my school called Kathleen and now I’ve got to imagine her throwing it back while shovelling turkey dinosaurs,” he added in a hilarious anecdote.
The comic video’s comments were flooded with laughter emojis, as Munya suggested that Drake accidentally gave a “shout out the panel of Loose Women” by mistake.
He closed the hysterical reel by sending a message to the global superstar: “Drake I’d just say for your British listeners, most of the time we hear those names it’s because one of them’s about to have a double hip replacement.”

And rather than opt for the obvious by dressing up as Ryan Gosling’s Ken, Alan transformed into his Barbie namesake, Allan.

The pair, who earlier this year teamed up to front BBC renovation series The Italian Job, even performed an opening skit as the characters as they got proceedings underway at the Camden’s Roundhouse venue in London.
Amanda and Alan have recently finished filming a second series of their travel show, as they transform another dilapidated historic home that had been purchased for one Euro, which will then be sold off to raise money for Children in Need and Comic Relief.
She recently said of the season two: “I’m obviously absolutely delighted that Alan and I have been given a second series of a show that we created together.
“This time I’m considering ditching my nail extensions but I’ll certainly be keeping the lashes! I’ve got the Aperol Spritz on ice and I’m being fitted for a new boiler suit as we speak!”
She added: “I adore Alan and this job suits us both perfectly. The sweetest thing about it all is that we can continue to raise more money for charities that make a huge difference to the lives of so many.”

Alan agreed: “So excited to be returning to Italy with my good friend Amanda for more blood sweat and tiles. Can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and transform another Euro house. What could possible go wrong?!!”
The first series of Amanda and Alan’s Italian Job is available on BBC iPlayer now.
“Y’ello? You’ll have to speak up, I’m wearing a towel” is what Homer says to the person calling him as he stands in his workplace in the episode “Bart Gets Famous” from season five of The Simpsons.
Until now, I thought this was just a silly gag, just another Homer-ism for the books but no, this joke is actually a callback to classic radio, thanks to the influence of legendary comedy writer John Swartzwelder.
Swartzwelder wrote 59 episodes of The Simpsons — more than any other writer in the show’s history —and it’s thought a huge part of his influence was old radio lines.
Benedict Townsend, a comedian and host of Scroll Deep, formerly known as Youtube News, discusses Swartzwelder’s radio influence on a recent video saying, “he was much older than a lot of The Simpsons writers, most of them were Harvard graduates who were like 23, like Conan O’Brien.”
He adds that Swartzwelder was in his 40s when he joined as a writer and his love of old-time radio comedy was what brought his wildly popular episodes to life.

The radio influence in classics Simpsons gags
Swartzwelder’s interest in vintage comedy brought us the iconic Homer vs. the First Amendment (one of Swartzwelder’s favourite episodes ever) episode which has a retro-vibe from the get-go as an old Prohibition law is enforced and Homer reinvents himself as the Beer Baron.
Even within that, though, the beloved character ‘Moleman’ says, “that’s not a knife, this is a knife” and proceeds to pull out a sword.
As he pulls it out, he starts to fall and says in his beloved warbly voice “oh, down I go”. Which is another callback to radio plays because of course, you don’t need to be told he’s falling down when you can see it.
As for the towel joke? It’s because when people with long hair would call into radio shows, they may have been in the middle of drying their hair and had a towel wrapped around it so they’d ask the hosts to speak up to ensure that they were heard through the towel.

The gag of course is that Homer is wearing a towel but not in a way that would affect his hearing.
Swartzwelder also takes credit for popularising the word “Meh”
“Meh” is a word with Yiddish origins but it was brought to screens around the world in 1994 by Swartzwelder. First used in the 1994 episode “Sideshow Bob Roberts” when a librarian reacts to Lisa’s surprise that voting records are not classified. It also appeared later in “Lisa’s Wedding” after Marge weaves the words “Hi Bart” on a loom to try to pique her son’s interest in weaving, to which he responds “meh”.
It’s been repeated frequently in the show since then and speaking to the New Yorker, Swartzwelder said, “I originally heard the word from Howie Krakow, my creative director at Huvis, Binzer & Churchill, in 1970 or 1971. He said it was the funniest word in the world.
“I don’t know when it was invented, or by who, but I got the impression it was already very old when Howie told it to me.”
Turns out, I’ve spent my whole life quoting John Swartzwelder.
Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Miss You and Honky Tonk Woman are just some of the hits that spring to mind when you think of The Rolling Stones.
And now, the rockers are back with a new record… and it’s receiving glowing reviews across the board.

Titled Hackney Diamonds, the album comes 18 years after their last – A Bigger Bang (which, let’s face it, wasn’t their greatest attempt to smash the charts) – and is also their first release since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021.
So, ahead of Hackney Diamonds’ official release on Friday, here’s what critics are already saying about the Stones’ latest effort…

“‘Let the old still believe that they’re young,’ Mick Jagger cries in a definitive Rolling Stones ethos that is delivered towards the end of Hackney Diamonds… And with that attitude, there’s no reason to believe it’ll be their last.
“In truth, the median age of its roll call belies the sheer vitality of the thing. [Keith] Richards and Ronnie Wood rip through gritty glam and blues rock riffs like guitarists half of half their ages, and rather than mutter reflective wisdom gleaned from a rock’n’roll life mid-winddown – a la Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan – [Mick] Jagger bawls and yowls about blurry nights, media intrusion and relationship ructions like an eternal A-list twentysomething.”
“The Stones have retained the essence of a bluesy bar band ever since, and therein lies their charm. They have never taken themselves too seriously. They have never tried to save the world. They’re simply here to show us a good time.
“Hackney Diamonds is a joy from beginning to end because it reminds us of the things we love about the Stones while still sounding like it belongs to the modern age.”
“A collection of bangers (old-school division) that nobody in their right mind had a right to expect in 2023, Hackney Diamonds isn’t just another new Stones album, but a vibrant and cohesive record — the first Stones album in ages you’ll want to crank more than once before filing away.

“Whether it’s a first-time Stones producer (Andrew Watt), bits of technological wizardry, or simply a desire to remind us why we cared about them in the first place, they haven’t sounded this brisk and focused in what feels like a half century.”
“It might reasonably be argued, Hackney Diamonds must be the best rock’n’roll album for 40 years, at least. Its dozen songs are jam-packed with Jagger swagger, Richards’ riffology, Woods’ twisty licks and aching Glimmer twins harmonies, bound together by tight rhythms, catchy melodies, snappy lyrics, dirty energy and flashes of the band’s trademark hair-raising flair…
“Hackney Diamonds is so full of life, so shot through with love and energy, only a fool would bet against them doing it again. The Stones roll on. All is indeed well in the rock’n’roll world.”
“The band finish with a nod to their roots in the blues by covering Muddy Waters’ Rolling Stone Blues. When Jagger and Richards first met as teenagers at Dartford railway station in 1961, Mick had a prized Muddy Waters LP in his hands, bonding with Keith over their shared musical tastes. Sixty-two years on, this affectionate cover brings the pair full circle, cementing a studio comeback that rolls back the years with astonishing aplomb.”
The Los Angeles Times asked the pop rocker what she considered her “best and worst singles” in an interview published Wednesday.
“Worst? I mean, there’s been so many,” she replied. “Maybe ‘True Love.’”

The 2012 song, which features English singer Lily Allen, includes lyrics like “You’re an asshole but I love you” and “I really hate you so much I think it must be true love.” Pink’s husband, former motocross star Carey Hart, appears in the music video.
Pink had a sweet reason for selecting the track as her worst, describing it as “mean.”
“Carey’s got thick skin, but I owe him a love song,” she said.
She also came up with an additional contender for the bottom spot.
“Oh wait, I did put out that SpongeBob thing,” she said, referencing a 2009 track for Nickelodeon’s sealife-centric cartoon.
“‘We’ve Got Scurvy’? I wish I never did that. That was a real mistake.”
(While the Times’ transcription doesn’t specify what her tone was, we have to assume she was kidding, because who could regret starring in this music video?)
As for her best singles, the Grammy winner chose the 2001 smash hit “Get the Party Started” and 2008’s “So What,” which was about a temporary separation from Hart. Ironically, the song also helped the two reconcile. According to Us Weekly, the pair patched things up after Pink got in touch with Hart to ask him about appearing in the track’s music video.

She alluded to the tune’s role in their reunion during her Times interview, saying: “‘So What’ was fun from start to finish — writing it, singing it, performing it, the video. It was part of what got Carey and I back together.”
Judi Dench has received the seal of approval from a British wildlife charity.
The acclaimed British actor met a gray seal pup named after her when she visited the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, England, last month, the organization shared in a press release this week.
Dench, 88, was in the region with family on Sept. 22 and decided to stop by the sanctuary. The facility took in an injured and dehydrated female pup the same day.

“It was like fate,” sanctuary fundraising manager Leanne Atwood said in the release. “It just so happened that, as Dame Judi and her family explored the Sanctuary, this pup was admitted to our Seal Hospital.”
Since the sanctuary’s theme for naming seals this season is “actors and actresses,” there was only one moniker choice for the female pup.
“We knew we just had to name her after Judi Dench, who was already on our list of name ideas,” Atwood said.

The actor was “so excited to be able to meet pup Judi,” who is estimated to be about 3 weeks old.
A photo shows a scarf-clad Dench posing in front of a whiteboard that indicates another seal at the sanctuary is named Owen Wilson.
As for Judi, the seal, the sanctuary hopes to be able to release her back to the wild after she’s recovered.
Gray seals live in coastal areas along the North Atlantic Ocean, including Great Britain and Northern Europe, as well as eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. Wildlife experts on both sides of the ocean urge people to give seal pups space, noting that people often mistake the young critters for orphans when the mother is actually nearby. If a pup is clearly sick or injured, the general recommendation is to contact local wildlife authorities to help.
Richard, who is now a regular on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, described Phillip’s departure as “savage” in a new interview with The Sun, revealing he reached out to him amid the scandal.
“I feel very sorry for Phillip – it seemed a pretty savage outcome after 21 years,” he said.
“It seemed quite brutal to be honest. I took a paternal interest in it – I kept in touch, told him to take it easy and that it’ll be all right. He agreed. All things pass in the end.”
Richard added: “We’ve all been through terrible experiences and the worst ones are the phones that come out of a clear blue sky and you don’t see them coming.
“Politicians say they’re only one debate away from a catastrophe and it’s the same in our industry.”
Richard also ruled himself out or returning to This Morning’s famous sofa, having previously hosted alongside wife Judy Finnigan from the show’s inception in 1988 until 2001, saying he “enjoyed it” but “wouldn’t go back”.

Following Phillip’s exit from This Morning, the programme also faced accusations of bullying and being a “toxic” workplace – something which bosses were swift to deny.
ITV has so far not found a permanent replacement for Phillip, with Holly continuing to front the show with a rotation of other members of the on-air This Morning team, including Josie Gibson, Alison Hammond, Dermot O’Leary and Craig Doyle.
However, recent reports have suggested that Good Morning Britain regular Ben Shephard is looking like a contender to land the full-time role, after apparently impressing bosses with a guest stint on the show last month.
