Emma Thompson Says Hugh Grant Was ‘So Cross’ Over Her Crying Scene In Sense And Sensibility

The actor starred as Elinor Dashwood, who is secretly in love with Hugh’s character Edward Ferrars, in the 1995 big-screen adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel.

In a scene near the end of the film, Emma’s character is overcome with emotion when Edward reveals to her he did not get married to the woman he’d been engaged to.

Speaking to the New Yorker, Emma revealed that Hugh was not exactly impressed when she decided to cry over his character’s monologue.

“She was not aware of what was inside her, and it suddenly emerges,” she said, previously writing in her diary, “I was trying to make it as involuntary as possible. A case of the diaphragm taking over.”

She continued: “Hugh Grant was so cross. He said, ‘You’re going to cry all the way through my speech?’ I said, ‘Hugh, I’ve got to. That’s the gag. It’s funny.’ And he says, ‘Yeah, but I’m speaking.’ I said, ‘I know.’”

Emma and Hugh have maintained a friendship over the years since first becoming co-stars, and reunited on screen in 2003 festive favourite Love Actually.

Back in 2018, Hugh hailed Emma as “a genius” in an interview with People, but quipped that she is “not remotely sane”.

“She’s nuttier and nuttier as the years go,” he said.

Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant may not be a couple any more, but it seems like the pair still have a very cheeky relationship.

Liz’s son Damian has revealed the nickname the Notting Hill actor has for him and his famous mum.

Hugh is actually godfather to the 19-year-old, and in a profile on Elizabeth in The Sunday Times (£), Damian spoke about his relationship with Hugh.

“My godfather Hugh [Grant] calls us ‘the Monsters’,” Damian said.

“He says we’re like a tornado when we swarm into a room … we look ‘terrifyingly alike and cause mayhem’.”

Damian has regularly made headlines for his similarity to his mother, even sporting a version of Elizabeth’s ‘safety pin dress’ that she wore to the premiere of Four Weddings And A Funeral with Hugh over 25 years ago.

Elsewhere in the interview, Liz said she hopes she always remains friends with ex-boyfriend.

“He’s very happily married,” she told the paper. “I spent some time with him and his wife a few weeks ago at a birthday party. He has five children.

“He’s a great daddy. His career is through-the-roof fantastic at the moment. Best reviews of his life, brilliant offers on the table. We’re good friends and I hope it always stays that way.”

She also revealed that Hugh has been surprised at the way she has changed since they were together from 1987 to 2000.

“I was a recluse for years. I didn’t leave the house unless I was being paid to do so. I couldn’t bear people listening to me, staring at me, watching me. I felt vulnerable and scared the entire time,” she said.

Recalling a more recent time when she and Hugh drove to pick up Damian from school, Elizabeth continued: “On the way I stopped the car and said, ‘I’m getting a coffee.’ When I got back, he said, ‘You went out to a shop? I’ve never seen you do that ever.’ I told him I now go to my local Waitrose. He was like, ‘You go to a supermarket?’ It’s normal for me now.

“I don’t know if I’d go to Waitrose on the Kings Road, I think I’d start sweating, but Boots on Fulham Road? Maybe.”

Hugh Grant And Colin Firth Had Company From An Unlikely Star During Bridget Jones Fight Scene

Hugh Grant and Colin Firth had some company from an unlikely star as they filmed their famous fight scene in Bridget Jones’ Diary.

Sally Phillips, who played Shazza opposite Renée Zellweger as Bridget, has revealed that Jim Carrey watched on as the pair fought in character as Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleaver.

Ahead of the film’s 20th anniversary, Sally appeared on Friday’s edition of Lorraine, where she recounted Hugh and Colin filming the scene.

She said: “This is them improvising… slapping each other, trying to kick and missing.

“We filmed this scene for a whole week. As you can see we’re not in it very much so we sat in deck chairs and watched Hugh and Colin slap each other for a week.”

Sally then revealed: “And Jim Carrey was there. Renée was dating Jim at that point.

“So he was bigger and taller and harder and fitter than both of them, so I think they were even more embarrassed.”

During the interview, Sally also told of how strange it was for her to see Renée, who is from Texas, finally breaking out of her English accent at the end of the shoot, joking she felt “deceived and weirded out”.

“It was really weird,” she said. “I’ve made quite good friends with her during the filming, I realised towards the end when she suddenly lost a stone in the last week and started talking in a Texan accent at the wrap party, I’d made friends with Bridget, not Renée.

“I felt like those women must feel who’ve had a relationship with an undercover cop, a bit deceived and weirded out. But I think it was genius actually (to cast her).”

Sally continued: “There were lots of people up for that part, like Toni Collette I think was offered it.

“Once They got Hugh Grant and Colin Firth on board it went from being a tiny indie movie to a massive production and they started looking for big stars.

“American women do do charm in a way British women don’t, we have a kind of bottom note of battleaxe that we can never quite get rid of and I love that about us.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.

Hugh Grant Does Some Serious Oversharing Recalls Debilitating Stomach Bug On Set Of Early Film

Hugh Grant has shared a graphic memory of being struck down with some pretty alarming stomach issues while filming one of his earliest films.

Back in the late 1980s, Hugh appeared in The Bengali Night, opposite John Hurt Supriya Pathak, which required him to spend three months filming in Calcutta.

In a recent interview on the podcast WTF With Marc Maron, the Bafta-winning star revealed he became ill “on day three” of filming, with a debilitating (and “explosive”) case of food poisoning that never really got any better as the weeks went on.

He recalled: “On that film, I was there for three months and I didn’t leave the lavatory except to shoot my scenes – and then I had to go back to continue with my explosive diarrhoea.”

During the same interview, Hugh also discussed a day he found himself stuck in traffic in Calcutta, only to discover his car was “next to a dead body on a stretcher”.

The British star was similarly candid last year, when he revealed he’d contracted Covid-19 in the early days of the pandemic.

“It started as just a very strange syndrome where I kept breaking into a terrible sweat. It was like a poncho of sweat, embarrassing really,” Hugh said.

“Then my eyeballs felt about three sizes too big and this feeling as though an enormous man was sitting on my chest – Harvey Weinstein or someone. I thought, ‘I don’t know what this is’.”

Hugh continued: “Then I was walking down the street one day and I thought, ‘I can’t smell a damn thing’. And you start to panic – by then, people were just starting to talk about this as a symptom.

“I started sniffing flowers, nothing. And you get more and more desperate. I started sniffing in garbage cans. You know, you want to sniff strangers’ armpits because you just can’t smell anything.

“I eventually went home and I sprayed my wife’s Chanel No. 5 directly into my face. Couldn’t smell a thing, but I did go blind.”
