Hugh Grant Says It’s A ‘Complete Mystery’ Why This Film Of His Was A Supposed ‘Box Office Bomb’

Hugh Grant has repeatedly spoken about being in what he’s affectionately described as the “freak show” stage of his career, which has seen him bounding from one eccentric character to the next in the last few years.

Among them have been a religion-obsessed recluse in the horror film Heretic, an eccentric thespian in Paddington 2 and, infamously, an Oompa Loompa in the movie musical Wonka.

Throughout it all, though, Hugh says he’s been choosy about the roles that he selects, turning down anything he thinks has been “insufficient in quality or independence allowed to the filmmakers”.

And that’s why he was so bemused when one of his more recent movies underperformed at the box office.

Speaking to Vanity Fair last year to promote Heretic, Hugh was asked about Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, in which he played the conniving scam artist Forge Fitzwilliam.

Despite largely glowing reviews (including from Hugh himself, who maintains it is “such a good film”), the adventure movie was described by some critics as a “box office bomb”, which the Bafta winner admitted he’s still perplexed by.

“It’s the biggest mystery to me,” the British star admitted, questioning: “Why didn’t anyone do market research before?”

Hugh continued: “I think that’s what went wrong: Basically, people just thought, I don’t want to see a film about this game. Why had no one asked the public?”

During another interview last month, Hugh shared his love of another film from his back catalogue that he still has a lot of affection for, even though it was torn apart by critics.

The Love Actually star can currently be seen in the new Bridget Jones sequel Mad About The Boy, reprising the role of Daniel Cleaver from the first two films.

Hugh famously chose not to take part in the third movie, Bridget Jones’s Baby, and candidly explained his reasoning last year.

Hugh Grant And Renée Zellweger’s Reunion Is Nostalgic Bridget Jones Bliss

Bridget Jones fans, who suffered a Hugh-Grant-free third movie, will be glad to see the Daniel Cleaver actor rightfully reunited with Renée Zellweger for the premiere of the fourth movie in the beloved franchise.

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy will hit cinemas on 14 February (Valentine’s Day) this year, almost a decade and a half after the first movie’s 2001 release.

Earlier this week, the iconic pair appeared on the red carpet of the newest instalment’s premiere.

The Paris appearance may have been a little familiar to diehard Bridget Jones fans.

Hugh’s half-opened shirt (no tie, naturally) under a black jacket is reminiscent of his very first Bridget Jones premiere appearance, while Renée Zellweger’s one-shoulder Saint Laurent dress could well have been an homage to her also-black, also-peekaboo 2001 movie gown.

The 2025 movie will see Bridget navigate “life as a widow and single mom with the help of her family, friends, and former lover Daniel,” an official synopsis says.

“Back to work and on the apps, she’s pursued by a younger man and maybe – just maybe – her son’s science teacher.”

Hugh Grant previously shared on The Graham Norton Show that the newest movie is “very, very sad,” but added it’s also “good and moving”.

He continued to share that despite there being “no obvious role” for his character, he was “crammed in” to the movie regardless.

All we can say is, thank the rom-com gods for that.

Hugh Grant Gets Very Graphic About Accidentally Giving His Family Food Poisoning (Twice)

Hugh Grant has admitted his foray into cooking hasn’t been entirely successful.

The British actor recently interviewed his Bridget Jones co-star Renée Zellweger for a feature in British Vogue, during which she was left stunned by the news that he’d recently started cooking for himself and his family.

“Do you know I’ve started cooking for the first time in 64 years,” he shared, to which Renée responded: “What, toast?”

He revealed: “I can’t stop barbecuing. Can’t stop buying barbecue equipment. And now that it’s winter, I’ve moved indoors and I can’t stop buying Le Creuset.”

Unfortunately, he then disclosed that he’s “poisoned my family twice” by “[giving] them worms” as a result of “undercooked chicken”.

“It was dark, you see,” Hugh explained. “It was on the barbecue and I stuck my Heston Blumenthal prod into it. I couldn’t quite read it. So I served it out – worms all round.

“And the children now beg me not to cook.”

This isn’t the first time Hugh has lifted the lid on his family life, since becoming a father in his 50s.

Back in 2021, he opened up about how his children had to be home-schooled during the pandemic, recalling how his son had “stabbed himself in the face with a Biro” after one particular frustrating incident.

More recently, he told the SmartLess podcast that fatherhood had changed him from “a “dried-up, middle-aged, golf-addicted Englishman” to someone with “heart” and “more layers or something”.

During a different interview on Kelly Clarkson’s US talk show, the Since U Been Gone singer questioned the Heretic star about whether he is a “jungle gym dad” who has kids “crawling all over” him, prompting a surprisingly sincere response.

He said with a smile: “I love a bit of that, yeah. I mean, there’s a lot to dread [about fatherhood], because I’m old and it’s noisy and it’s unbearable and I do a lot of hiding in the loo. I do a lot of sleeping in there now! There’s a lock, but they’ve pretty much broken it now… but it is nice.”

“I’m going home tonight, and let’s face it, the bit where they jump in your arms, the six-year-old, you know. She calls it her chimpanzee hug. I quite like that,” he added.

Hugh Grant Names The 1 Film Of His That His Wife Is ‘Banned’ From Watching

Hugh Grant has admitted there’s one film from his oeuvre that he’s in no rush to revisit.

During a recent interview with Variety, the Bafta winner reflected on some of the romantic comedies that helped make him a global star – including one that still has a special place in his heart, despite its not-so-glowing reviews.

However, the British actor also made it clear that he’s not quite so nostalgic for all of his past work.

When the interviewer praised the 1995 movie Nine Months, Hugh apparently screamed “as if startled”, stating: “Let me stress, everyone involved with that film, with the exception of me, was brilliant and talented. It was just me that let it down.”

Nine Months told the story of a couple expecting their first child, and featured an all-star cast that also included Julianne Moore, Jeff Goldblum, Joan Cusack and Robin Williams.

Hugh added: “My wife wants to watch it, but I’ve forbidden her. I’ve put parental controls on the screen so that you can’t get it.”

Back in 2023, Hugh joked during an appearance on The Late, Late Show that he would “happily shred my IMDb page” because he “specialised in being bad for decades”.

Asked to specifically name one film he would make disappear if possible, the Heretic star answered with 1988’s The Lady And The Highwayman, describing it as “low-budget, bad wig, bad hat”.

While Hugh is known for being self-deprecating about his work, he also made it clear during his interview with Variety that if people heard him slating his experience on one of his most recent movies in particular, it was all intended in good humour.

“On the web, it’s become a fact that I hated making that film,” Hugh lamented. “And I didn’t hate it all; I loved making it. I’m absolutely thrilled with it.”

He continued: “That’s what the internet does. It scrubs humour, and it scrubs context to create little clickbait moments. It’s one of the reasons I loathe it with such violence, really.”

Two decades years after Love Actually first graced our screens and became one of the most beloved – and successful – Christmas films of all time, some of its stars have been doing a bit of reminiscing.

In a 20th anniversary special released in 2022, cast members including Bill Nighy, Laura Linney, Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant came together to take a trip down memory lane.

Thankfully, most of them have long memories – including Emma, who recalls the first time that she and Hugh watched the finished version of the festive film.

Although Hugh’s response, according to Emma, wasn’t exactly warm and fuzzy.

“Hugh came up behind me as we were walking out and said, ‘Is that the most psychotic thing we’ve ever been in?’” Emma recalled in the special.

Hugh then responded sheepishly: “Did I say that?”

Love Actually may be ingrained in the public consciousness, but a year earlier Hugh admitted he is a little less familiar with the details of the 2003 film – revealing he can’t actually remember what happened to his character.

Asked about the possibility of a Love Actually sequel in an interview with Digital Spy in 2021, Hugh replied: “I don’t know. I’ve never thought about that… I can’t even remember what happens in the film.”

He explained with a laugh: “It’s so long since I’ve seen it. You’d have to remind me. How do I end up?”

The Bafta wi played the UK prime minister, David, who falls for Downing Street staff member Natalie, played by former EastEnders star Martine McCutcheon.

In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, Hugh, as the PM, can be seen prancing about No.10 to the Pointer Sisters’ Jump (For My Love), which the actor later described as “absolute hell”.

Billed as \"the ultimate romantic comedy,\" Love Actually involves more than a dozen main characters, each weaving his or her way into another’s heart over the course of one particularly eventful Christmas. The seemingly perfect wedding of Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor) brings many of the principals together, including heartsick best man Mark (Andrew Lincoln), who harbors a very unrequited crush on Juliet. There’s also recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), trying to help his lonely stepson Sam (Thomas Sangster) express his true feelings to a classmate. Across town, devoted working mother Karen (Emma Thompson) tries to rekindle the passion of her husband, Harry (Alan Rickman), who secretly pines for a young colleague of his. In the same office, the lonely Sarah (Laura Linney) not-so-secretly pines for a man just a few desks away (Rodrigo Santoro), who returns her affections but may not be able to dissuade her neuroses. Providing the unofficial soundtrack for all of the couples is an aging rocker (Bill Nighy) who just wants to cash in and get laid — but even he might find a meaningful relationship in the most unlikely of places.
